Julia Holter doing what she does best. There’s just something magical about Holter’s lyricism and her ability to wrap atmospheric textures to create a magical soundscape. Whilst Holter may not be particularly catchy she is still very memorable and here she has created one of my favorite pieces of music of 2015. The textures are sweeping, almost taking you under the waves of the ocean like a siren’s song. For me it does seem like in the last half-decade enigmatic art pop seems to be a genre that is showing us the early masterworks of the twenty-first century. The new movement of art pop seems to be distinctly modern yet also eerily familiar— it reminds me of chamber pop musicians from the mid-twentieth century as they evoked organic yet fluttering music but revamped with the current aesthetic of the indie pop of the current century. The combination creates a perfect synthesis of music that is immaculately produced and sonically intriguing.

It is no question for me that Susanne Sundfor has released one of the defining albums of the year and probably the best collection of synthpop ideas I’ve heard in a very long time. Ten Love Songs is dark and moody but also undeniably catchy yet ethereal, drawing you into the sonic colors that are painted before you and ultimately trapping you in Sundfor’s world and it’s a world I don’t know if I ever want to leave. Maybe it’s the fall season coming up with Halloween ready to dawn over me, but I’ve felt this way consistently about this record since it’s debut release in February so it’s not just a seasonal mood. This will not be trumped as the best pop release of the year and perhaps the best release this year period.

I’ve been familiar with Matana Roberts for a little while now, but this record sort of snuck up on me and I kept telling myself “I’ll listen to it later” time after time throughout the year so far. This one is kind of perfect music for the early morning for me as Roberts’ sense of experimentation is very soothing and ambient. I listened to the previous Coin Coin records, but this one is simply in another time zone than the previous two records and perhaps it is a testament to the growth of Matana Roberts herself as a musician or maybe even my mood right now. The textures are really neat alongside this said atmospheric element and I don’t think I got bored during the whole thing. Easily deserving of the BEA praise I’ve seen it been getting.

Disguised as a nostalgic look at John Darnielle’s affection of professional wrestling, Beat the Champ is actually much like the singer/songwriter’s earlier works such as The Sunset Tree with emotive reflection on childhood, life, and escapism. At the center of it you can hear Darnielle’s reflections on his step-father who he recalls with a distinct bitterness as he uses clever analogies that seem on the surface like kitsch nostalgia. Lines like “You let me down but Chavo never once did.” (The Legend of Chavo Guerrero) really make this obvious as Darnielle spits lines of folk imagery that are some of the best in his entire career. Beat the Champ is perhaps the best folk record of the year and the best thing Darnielle has done in over a decade. It’s amazing how something so silly on the surface can be so earnest, reflective, and deep. The talent of a skilled songwriter, indeed.

It’s been six years since Built to Spill released There is No Enemy which was, for me, a collection of songs that I wasn’t really in love with and for someone introduced to the indie rock icons with You in Reverse I was sort of expecting to enjoy that record… which didn’t happen. Untethered Moon is the exact opposite of that feeling as I find myself absolutely loving songs such as “All Our Songs”, “Another Day”, and “Living Zoo”. In a way I think I could think of this record as a return to form, though it’s not like their previous album was a harrowing disappointment either; I’ve never disliked a Built to Spill record much like I haven’t disliked a Modest Mouse or Pixies record – they are these bands that are in a camp of “do no wrong” for me and I find myself enjoying them among my favorite bands of all time; but then again even the Beach Boys made records that offended me, so maybe they just haven’t quite jumped the shark for me yet. Anyway, this record is pretty much what you’d expect; noisy guitarwork, indie melodies, and Doug Martsch’s vocals that just make you nod your head during the whole thing in indie rock fashion.

People are calling it kind of a misstep but I don’t see it. Ignore the internet critics or whatever, it’s worth a look.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.7/100, a mean average of 92.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.2.

Big-time respect simply for completing any year chart, let along providing meaningful commentary for a number of albums on it. I love Carrie & Lowell and Short Movie, and your #1 pick of Have You in My Wilderness is outstanding. I also appreciate your placing Beat the Champ in your top ten; I especially liked "Heel Turn 2" from that album. Overall just a fantastic chart.

23 albums in common! And even more that I like. Love the inclusion of Daniel Romano, and obviously all the metal is awesome. Plus, that #1 is perfect.
