The bassline draws from the Melvins's "It's Shoved."
Let's have a bit more of the loud quiet loud formula to please the hardcore fans. At this stage in their career the fan base had become so broad that you were never going to please all of the people all of the time.
I'm glad the hardcore like it and I don't dislike it but it's not going to score high for me.
From what I've read the next album may have gone in a different direction. Unfortunately tomorrow never knows.
One of the highlights of the album in my opinion. A bit over raw for a normal audience but anyway. Awesome track!

In my opinion, this is the darkest song on In Utero, even darker than Heart Shaped Box. The lyrical imagery and melody is intense, and even the "quiet" parts are incredibly chilling.
