"American Idiot" is unapologetic in its lambasting of Western media and its subliminal messaging that breaches the fragile minds of the standard American tax-paying consumer.
It's always interesting to behold a new step in technological advancement. But it's also interesting to see when people expose the flaws and downsides of such technologies, such as negative influences on society's moral fabric. And with the rapidly developing world of multimedia electronics and services, such as Hi-Definition television, super-fast internet connections readily available to most households, and mobile communications, ideas disseminate all the more quickly. Clearly this capability, right, and privilege to diffuse information has been abused by those with self-serving agendas. Even worse is that people are so naturally susceptible to subliminal messaging, blindly following manipulative governmental and media institutions.
Green Day successfully combines their signature pop-punk sound with a faster tempo and social commentary on "American Idiot". The beat, guitars, and the vocals are so well fused into one cohesive, full texture that it's nearly impossible to not get hooked by this song.

Probably the perfect way to start the album, it doesn't set up any characters, but it sets the entire tone for the album.
What an explosive start to the album, this is like a punch in the face. The fact that it achieved mainstream success is not a contradiction, it rather proves its point.
