this is my repeat album of the night. doesn't have as many moments of genius as Untrue or Kindred, but it's his most consistant, and likely his most accesible album.
Murs & 9th's fifth and final ten-song collaboration album. They've never come close to matching the heights of their first (Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition - which is a stone cold classic so go and get it), but this sounds like their best since then on first listen. The first track features 9th's new female protegee Rapsody in a classic case of torch-passing, and she murders the beat. It's also cool to see how Murs has progressed as an MC technique-wise without losing any of the everyman appeal that made him so fun to listen to in the first place. If you've listened to a Murs & 9th album before then you'll know what to expect by now; jazzy beats, relatable stories about girls and his hometown and Murs still coming to terms with his place in the industry. Definitely better than Murs & Fashawn's album from earlier this year (My Generation), and a fitting end to what has been an often exhilarating (but just as frequently boring) series of collaborations. I'm on the last track now, and I've thoroughly enjoyed the whole album. There are no real missteps, but no particular standouts either. 'Tale of Two Cities' is very good, but Kendrick already did that theme better this year. 'Walk Like A Woman' is also awesome, but coming on the back of another song about girls it's perhaps a bit too much. The aforementioned opener 'Get Together' is brilliant, but Rapsody almost steals the show from Murs. My favourite beat is probably 'Better Way', and whilst Murs tries to bring a very human touch to what is often an overbearing subject (on giving up pork: "when I first quit pork it made my mother shout / and did I miss pepperoni? Oh, no doubt"), it just ends up as yet another cheesy attempt at an uplifting hip-hop song. Is Murs at his best? Probably not. Is 9th at his best? Nowhere near. Is it better than Murs 3:16? Of course not. Is it better than everything since? Yes. Is that enough to appease me? Most definitely.
