Writing an academic study of this band. Each of these records are actually concept albums of periods of history; one for the dadrocker era, the other for the grunge scene.
Six years on and I still find this a little underwhelming, to be honest. It's not bad, and occasionally great, but I find it's little more than a serviceable indie-dance record, with plenty of fun, if obvious, post-punk reference points. I understand why people like them, but I just don't see why people think they're amazing. That said, it's been a while since I decided to listen to this record and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it, but there's nothing stunning about this (except the closer, which will always be the one song of theirs I'll return to relatively frequently). File under "good; not great".
yea, actually me too... not from a fan point of view. First time I have heard it and I think because of the production quality, his music is just conveyed better... plus cooler arrangements.
Cool, so I'm not the only one. Though, I wouldn't say the production is good. Or at least not the mastering. Just listen to the brass instruments to hear how distorted they are. But the arrangements are really high quality, and the best I've heard from him. Overall, though, I just love the celtic/Irish vibe he has on this record, it's awesome.
