I imagine the reason you want the band is for the sake of the audience? As in the way your audience perceives the project? If so, I'd suggest creating a fictional mythos yourself. Shroud it in secrecy and suggest an intriguing backstory. That's how I'd do it.

As you might suspect, none of these people exist. It was all Steven Wilson. But he wanted Porcupine Tree to be a band, so he created one himself.
Why Prince? From the little knowledge I do have Prince seems to appear to be a solo artist. 'The Revolution' part seems to be secondary like the 'E Street Band'. I wouldn't want my name at the fore front like either of them.
