Personally I think that's an exaggeration, and to say that would be ignoring that the Beatles themselves took a lot from other bands. |
Absolutely. Off the top of my head...
Roy Orbison - toured with him, Please Please Me was an imitation of his style
Bob Dylan - John's lyrics were hugely influenced by Dylan
The Who - Helter Skelter was a response to the Who
The Beach Boys - influenced Sgt. Pepper, also the vocal harmonies in their later music
The Shirelles - covered a lot of their songs
Buddy Holly - covered his work, including even obscure B-sides
Carl Perkins - George's biggest early guitar influence
Elvis - duh
Little Richard - McCartney loved his falsetto
The OK Go quote was probably intentionally hyperbolic, but still... the Beatles were a product of their environment just like any other artist. The difference between them and, say, Elvis, is that they remain eminently listenable 50 years later -- by critics, music lovers, and just about anyone. They have their detractors, of course, but I'm sure Mozart does too.
