I assume you imported the songs using the previous program? If so, how did you load that library into iTunes? Did you just drag all of the files into iTunes or did you change the iTunes directory to your external hard drive's music directory?

No...the files from my old program were damaged, so I started from scratch and loaded them into itunes from cd's.

Okay. If you go into iTunes preferences, does the "iTunes Media folder location" direct to your external hard drive or to another location?

To the external drive.

Okay. After some digging, it seems that unknown error (-69) is related to iPod syncing. It's bizarre that you're experiencing that error.

(1) Check that the folder listed in your iTunes preferences actually directs to the correct folder. For example, mine directs to a folder called "iTunes Media" and when I locate that folder on my hard drive, it has another folder entitled "Music" in it. Inside that folder, I have folders for every artist in my library.

(2) Is the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" option checked or unchecked in your preferences? Make sure it checked.

(3) Right-click any song in your library that doesn't work and select "Get Info". If there is no "Get Info", there might be a similar option. At the bottom of the screen that pops up, check that the file location is in the directory listed in step (1).

Okay. Here's the whole deal as of right now.

I bought a Seagate 2tb external drive. I manually loaded all of my music onto JRiver, and stored all of my music on the external drive. The external drive took a shit, and I lost everything. JRiver was not great, so I decided to go back to iTunes.

I got the external drive replaced. I loaded all of the music manually into the iTunes folder I set up on the external drive. Worked perfectly. For two weeks. Now I can't even access itunes anymore. I'm getting a circle of errors that makes me want to kill people. I have deleted iTunes and re-installed it. I have tried everything people have told me to do. Nothing works. I can't even access the music on the external drive on iTunes on my laptop.

When I open up the external drive, it shows the iTunes folder, but now the folder is fucking empty...but it also shows that the drive is half full, which it was with all of the music files.

So, here's what I need to do:

1st: I want to know if my external drive is hosed again. Is there a scan I can run that will tell me that? If it's not, is there a way I can still use the music files...if they still exist?

2nd: I want to know if my computer hard drive is shot. Is there a scan I can run that will tell me that?

3rd: I want a program that I can run in partnership with my external hard drive that won't fucking crash in two weeks?

Unless you are running Windows on your external hard drive, your regular hard drive should still be functioning. I don't think you would be able to boot if it has failed. Is it necessary to use the external hard drive? If using your regular hard drive is an option, it's much easier to set up and you can manually back up your library whenever you please. If the regular hard drive is not an option, read on.

If the files are not on your external hard drive, but are taking space, then they might be in the trash bin.

If you locate your music files somewhere, try this:

(1) In iTunes, remove all of your songs. If you select all of the songs and right click, there is a delete option. iTunes will ask you if you are certain if you would like to remove them. Select "Delete Songs". Another pop-up will ask you if you would like to move the songs to trash or keep them in your iTunes media folder. Select "Keep Files".

(2) Next, create a new folder on your external hard drive and name it "Music" or "Music Library"... anything appropriate. Do not bother creating any folders within that folder; iTunes will create everything necessary.

(3) Then, change the directory in iTunes preferences to that folder location. Also make sure that "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library" and "Keep iTunes media folder organized" are checked.

(4) Next, drag and drop all of your files onto iTunes. This may take seconds, minutes, hours depending on your computer and how many files you're transferring. When it finishes, you should notice that iTunes filled up that folder you created on your external hard drive. Make sure that iTunes filled that folder with your songs.

(5) You should now have two copies of your music. One copy will be in the new folder on your external and the other will be wherever you found them before (the ones you dragged onto iTunes). Leave the new folder alone, but delete the songs from the previous location.

Everything should work fine.

When trying to create a new folder on my external drive, I get the following:

"Could not find this item. This is no longer located in <%3 NULL:OpText>. Verify the item's location and try again."

Try ejecting the external hard drive, unplugging it, and plugging it back in again. You might even try plugging it into a different USB port.

"Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later".

Nothing on the computer is open.
