So many people, even otherwise knowledgeable music fans who have delved into many forms of music, consider country to be an inferior genre due to the shit on the radio of all eras such as Luke Bryan and George Strait. Country continues to be laughed at music about rednecks driving trucks while fucking their sisters due to the stereotypes it makes for itself and how it is portrayed in the media. Some of my favorite country is alt-country scene with artists such as Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch, Uncle Tupelo/early Wilco, Son Volt, 16 Horsepower, Lucinda Williams, Will Oldham, etc. There are also great artists from the old times such as Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams etc. I voted Yeehaww! (yes). If you want some country starting recs you can ask me.

I know that's not a very discussive point on the subject, but I always found it hillarious how country is a black sheep of sorts even if you ignore the GAC/CMT-oriented pop it still gets this "reputation" yet folk is spoken of in high esteem when the two aren't so wildly different. Is pop-country stupid? Yeah, but so is a lot of contemporary music. But that doesn't stop some of those pop-country musicians from being good musicians on their own.
Blah blah.
I like alt-country, outlaw country, even some pop-country; so sign me up for the support in this (old) thread.
I guess everyone has their own pet peeves (I think it's called like that), but the trust I put in someone's tastes is automatically divided by, like, 1000, if they say country music is shit. Like, even hip-hop I can accept, I've been there too, but really, country dismissing automatically turns someone into a boring close-minded person who takes themselves way too seriously, in my head. I'm OK with people disliking the genre obvs; it's just people who say its shit.
Country music is amazing, when not watered down into "I am a redneck and this is my beer and this is my truck and this is music". Even then, it's still not bad, just not really my thing.
But shit, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Sr., some awesome stuff.
And I'll lump bluegrass in with this, because it often gets mixed in with country. Bluegrass is a wonderful thing, it has this sense of fun, this looseness to it. It's like a bunch of buddies getting together with a couple guitars, a banjo, a bass and a mandolin and just having some fun. It's great stuff. _________________ Progressive Rock
Well when I was younger I dismissed all country as redneck bullshit, so I suppose there's no way I could say it hasn't grown on me. I've still never gotten a chance to get terribly into it, but I hella fuckin' dig on stuff by Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and Hank Williams, among others.
That being said, there is a certain breed of country I can't stand. I don't wanna say "pop country" is the proper term, because I can sure get down with some T. Swift any day from here to rapture, but you guys know the type I mean. The brand that's really emotionally shallow, boring lyrics about beer, Jesus, infidelity, or all of the above, with predictable, hackneyed chord progressions and dry vocals.
Reading over that I realize I basically just said "I don't like the country music that I don't like" but fuck it I'm pretty sure you guys know what I'm getting at here.
