It's been two whole years since I started listening to albums. After 900 albums, it's getting hard determining which albums are better than which since I catalogue them all.
I posted this in the album listening thread and I'm listening to it again now. This is really fucking good. Anyone who digs really pretty slowcore stuff like Carissa's Wierd and whatnot should give this a try. It's awesome. It's not on any charts right now, so I figured I'd shout it out.

time to try to stop looking objectively and focus on what you purely enjoy the most, because there's no such thing as better albums. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

If I'm the only one adding things to my chart, how can it be objective? It's still only my opinion. It's very obvious. Besides, critiquing things helps me look for little things in albums, so I'm enjoying the two things I love to do in sites like RYM and BEA: critique and listento music. I don't know why, but I love to critique things. Itmay seem a bit snobbish, but I'm usually pretty forgiving when I critique things.

I'm mostly just saying not to overthink it. All that really matters in the end is if you like it. The ranking and rating is fun but really that's it _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

But critiquing helps me enjoy an album more. In my case, it's smarter to critique so I have more fun. Plus, just listening and what not isn't why I joined in the first place. I joined to improve my reviewing skills, thus improving my writing skils.

So what do you do when you listen to an album - sit down in front of a computer and jot down what it is you either like or dislike about it, log it, label it with a genre tag and share it all here? Before you get your critic's hat on, do you not want to dance/cry/shout/laugh/vomit/punch the air/tap your feet/play air guitar to what's invading your ears first? And more importantly, start listening to the whole thing again 'cos it was so damn great (or lobbing it in the bin, marvellous production values notwithstanding)?
900 albums in two years is mental. It also means that more than likely your critique of each LP is going to be based on a gut or initial reaction, more than likely delving too deep into the technical rather than the ethereal. Some albums take a lot more, you know... getting into, and if you're going to hop from one album to the next in such a quick time you may well bypass something that repeated listening would surely reward. But hey, if that floats your boat then great - it's just a very, very alien concept to me as a music fan.
I don't think anyone could fault your dedication - but you're going to end up losing out on some amazing experiences unless you form emotional connections - both good and bad - with what you're listening to. Music is an art-form, after all, and not a collection of data to analyse, and I wonder what (if any) records you've allowed to become part of you and your own identity (such as - "I remember exactly where and when it was when I first heard "x" - like a signpost down the road that marks your life's journey). Because if you don't, it's like you're standing opposite someone you lust over who's naked and begging for it and only stroking their kneecap... _________________ 'Reggae' & t'ing Folk 'n Stuff SHAMELESS RECORD DEALER PLUG
Funny thing, my mind has a way of looking at things from multiple aspects at the same time. Whether I want to or not, there's an area of my mind that memorizes nearly everything about the album I'm currently listening to for a short term, and then I just write a review because I love music and I love to write. Besides, I'm really not missing out on much. Like I said, I enjoy it when I critique it. It's the way I look at things and no one else can really say that I, the only one who can truly judge my criteria, am missing out on anything when the truth is that I'm the only one who can say it. The only thing I feel I'm missing out on is how people love Ramones' debut so much.
People have tried telling me I'm missing out on things before, but they can't judge it. The only man who can say that about me is me. And like I said many times before, critiquing... soak this in... helps me enjoy music more. I've made up my mind. I came to these sites to find what I feel are the greatest ever, in hopes of possibly getting a job as a newspaper critic or columnist one day. I'm not giving up one of my favorite past-times: writing reviews, so people can think I'm getting everything out of music by just listening, hen the truth is I notice more when I look for something to be positive about.
And about that time, I have plenty of time on my hands to listen to albums, and even relisten to some. I've heard Ramones five times just to see what the hype was about, and I still do not get it, even when Ijust sit back and listen (because I normally can't stand repitition and the lead singer's darn annoying). I'd actually give Ramones a much lower score than what I do give it if I just listened.
