Gábor Lázár & Mark Fell - The Neurobiology of Moral Decision Making (2015)
Mark Fell is one of my favourite electronic musicians of all-time, and Gábor Lázár seems like a natural choice of collaborator from what I've heard (they both lean towards hyper-clean, almost mathematic subversions of modern, dancefloor-centric electronic music, rendering it largely dancefloor-unsuitable in the process, with welcome exceptions in Fell's case - see this year's deep house-inspired Fresh Insights EPs from Fell and Terre Thaemlitz, or snd's early UK garage experiments), even if I'd previously considered Lázár to be little more than a somewhat unnecessary Autechre tribute act. So far this basically sounds exactly as you'd expect; late-era snd (think 2009's Atavism) + Lázár's harsher, chunkier hand. I've seen this described as juke - well, it initially seems a ridiculous case of mis-pigeonholing, but there are definitely similarities in terms of the relentless, slightly arrhythmic repetition, especially on the fourth track. As with much of Fell's stuff, it may take a few listens until I truly find my feet with this one, but on first listen I'm enjoying it greatly regardless. Definitely recommended to dbz, secretdad; possibly something here, too, for Necharsian, sp4cetiger, bongristu, Gowi, Kool Keith Sweat, Norman Bates. _________________ 2021 in full effect.
