The new Tame Impala song is really, really great. I haven't really cared for the other couple I heard, but 'Eventually' is the shit. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
I've always found Melford really hit and miss, but this is fantastic - accessible, cool, piano-heavy (obviously) jazz that juts out at all sorts of angles, and is ready with surprises around every corner. Really complex and unpredictable, but without ever becoming abrasive or overly studious. Not that there's anything wrong with things being abrasive or overly studious, just that this isn't that. Sort of condenses everything I've ever liked about Melford. Could definitely see fans of last year's Aki Takase album liking this, as well as fans of Melford's previous work obviously.
Anyway, those are just the albums I added to the database today. There's plenty of other lovely stuff throughout my 2015 chart, so do go check some of it out and try something. Also, please leave me lovely recommendations in the comment section. Peace. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Also, there's a new beat tape from the boy Chester Watson. Personally I prefer him when he raps, but in interviews he claims to see himself as a producer first. His beats are great too, in fairness. Influences sound like they include Daedelus and DOOM. Worth checking out as a cool stopgap in between his actual rap releases. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Oh yeah, and Jeremy Pelt's got a new one out and I'm listening now; sounds excellent so far. From what I've heard of his (I only discovered him upon seeing him mentioned alongside Ambrose Akinmusire at some point last year in an article about the latter, and have since gone back and listened to his stuff retrospectively, so this is actually the first album of his that I've actually been aware of upon release), he's always been very obviously in thrall to Miles (then again, he's a fucking trumpeter - it comes with the territory), but this release finds him moving away from the fusion stylings of his last couple of records (including the excellent Water and Earth, which is must-listen stuff) and towards a more classic, acoustic, post-bop sound. It's sharp and angry and melancholy all sorts of brilliant so far (particularly that version of 'Vonetta' - what a fucking gem; find the original, a beautiful Shorter composition, on Miles' Sorcerer). Haven't quite finished it all, so in theory there's time for it to unravel and turn to shite, but I'd be very surprised if this doesn't end up very high on my 2015 chart after a few more listens. Fantastic stuff. #obligatoryjazzhashtag _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
