Various Artists - Synesthesia: The First Five Years [Medical Records] (2015)
Medical Records have been doing god's work for five years now, putting out high-quality reissues of lost and forgotten synthpop, Italo-disco, new wave, and all sorts of things in between. They've dug up and breathed new life into fantastic releases by the likes of Alexander Robotnick, Dalek I, Disco Volante, Paul Nelson, the amazing Post-Industrial Noise, and a host of other artists that I'm not at all familiar with (and certainly would never be if it weren't for Medical Records), and they've chalked up 50 different releases, of which this compilation is the most recent, bringing together some of their favourite moments from the albums and singles they've put out up to this point (amazing), and adding some of their favourite new acts doing cover versions of older artists (not so amazing, but still pretty interesting). Personal favourites are tracks by Near Paris, Drinking Electricity, the aforementioned Disco Volante, and the brilliantly named Gay Cat Park, and the album struggles to maintain the quality displayed during the first half (which certainly isn't helped by those newer acts), but as an introduction to the music Medical Records have been putting out this is absolutely fantastic, and I highly recommend it. You can listen to it here, and you can check out my favourite Medical Records release - a compilation of Post-Industrial Noise's stuff that came out earlier this year - over there. I only own one of their vinyl reissues, but it looks and sounds gorgeous, so it stands to reason that they all do, if you're into that sort of thing. Get happy kids. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
