Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots

I give a lot of credit to bands that try to make their own unique sound by fusing genres, and Twenty One Pilots certainly do that. They combine a little hip-hop, a little rock, even some reggae at some point, but their biggest strength is their keen ability to write a catchy hook, and that's what's gotten them to be so popular. Lyrically, this album is, at best, ok, and at worst kinda cringey. You've got lines like "The songs on the radio are ok/but my taste in music is your face" or "I'm driving, here I sit/Cursing my government/For not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement". It all feels like an angsty suburban kid's take on Linkin Park or something, but you know what? That's ok, there always has and always will be music for that, there's music for everyone from every walk of life. This album can be decent lyrically too, at the very least we know Tyler Joseph is being honest with us, it all feels very cathartic for him as he raps/sings about his emotional insecurities and all the issues he has. Blurryface is supposedly a character that represents all of his insecurities, which is a little eye-roll worthy, but it is what it is. All in all, this is a catchy record with some definite highlights and a couple tracks that are a bit forgettable. But still, the highlights are worth it.

21 Pilots to me are just shitty generic rap mixed with the most awful generic aspects of pop followed by bad versions of other genres. Putting them all together makes it a special kind of awful. I've never liked any Fueled by Ramen bands except some Paramore songs, and 21P may be the worst of them all.

They definitely got their shitty moments (like the lyrics I mentioned) but damn if they can't write a catchy hook

But yea, I can understand, it definitely feels like angsty suburban white kids music, and it feels a little overdramatic to me at times

Edgar Broughton Band by Edgar Broughton Band

A really underappreciated psych rock album from the early 70s. Very blues-based, but still with a little bit of weirdness that makes for a fun album. The guitar is great, thick, warm psych rock guitar, really solid album all around.

Saturday, May 30th

Believe it or not, I actually didn't listen to any albums on Saturday cause I spent the day at the beach.

i once had someone tell me the sound of gulls and waves crashing on the beach was superior to any mere music, but i have to say if i got an album of field recordings of just a day at the beach without at least some mumbled French overdubbed, i'd give it like three stars tops

this started as topical but i don't know where it went
