Only a first listen, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. A welcome change of pace after the rudeboy clutter of his last (which I thought was excellent, and certainly far better than most publications gave it credit for). Possibly lacks a bit of edge, but I thought it was a really pretty, engaging, mature listen. Will certainly be returning to it plenty over the summer. Maybe not quite as special as Dave DK's Val Maira in terms of chilled out, hazy techno albums I've heard this year, but definitely very strong in my opinion. Anyway, moving onto something considerably darker but not necessarily a million sonic miles away...

Cio D'Or - all in all. (2015)
Initially this was planned as a record built of three four-song suites, but it appears the final four tracks have been separated and are instead going to make up their own EP later this year. Minimal, hypnotic techno for restless sleepers. Good shit. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Released today, and quite possibly the finest compilation of the year thus far (at least for us funky souls). Blissful soul, funk and disco from 25 years of one of the genre's finest producers and impresarios. You can stream the whole damn show from here.
So I've seriously been considering breaking my own rule about not including reissues or compilations of older material on my year charts because of this. Not entirely sure on the origins, but the vast majority is likely taken from the early-mid 1980s. Very varied, though a lot of this falls under the umbrella of quasi-ambient, experimental synth stuff - veers from haunting, atmospheric, reverb/delay-heavy loveliness to oddball disco-pop to heavier industrial sci-fi beats. I guess the most helpful thing I can say is that this is well worth checking out if you like Arthur Russell, with whom Ricci seems something of a kindred spirit. Been enjoying this for a while now, with ever more rewarding returns, and I highly recommend it. Cool stuff all round. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs.
