Sometime ago I bought The Velvet Underground and Nico on vinyl for $1. I think it was so cheap because the album cover is gone, it's just one of those blank generic ones. That's going to bring down the value a lot but I was glad to pick up a good album for that cheap.

Now here's where it gets weird.

I was finally doing my deadformat (I'll link here when it's done) and trying to figure out a lot of pressing info for the first time. So I got to Velvet Underground and I was shocked at how many represses there were. I was kind of freaked out as there is no date anywhere on the vinyl, so it would be even harder to figure out the press. Except for one thing - on the label, V6/5008. Googling that shows exactly what you'd expect, but all as V6-5008. So I started trying to find V6/5008.

So far as I can tell (and I'm posting this here so someone can bring me back to earth), the only press that shows V6/5008 on the label instead of V6-5008 is the first press. So I freaked out a little bit and I've come here because if anyone knows anything about this, it'd be y'all. Any clue if my research holds up at all? Any idea what it could be worth without the original jacket?

Interesting, and potentially exciting at the same time. Annoyingly the most valuable aspect about any VU&N press is the cover (intact peelable banana, or even better Eric Emerson picture on the rear - known as the 'torso cover'), but nevertheless you'd still get a fair price for a first pressing even without the sleeve if it was in half-decent nick (i.e: clean vinyl, no surface noise). Coincidentally, is it a mono or stereo press?

Best thing for you to check would be what's etched/stamped in the dead wax, as that will indicate what pressing it is. Have a look, jot it down here and I'll have a hunt for you.

There are mis-pressed late 70s reissues with that cat. no. too just to make you aware...

That's the sort of thing I was waiting to hear, unfortunately. I knew the issue with the cover, I honestly probably don't plan on selling this just sort of want an idea of how lucky I got (frankly, finding any press that plays for $1 was great to begin with for the sake of owning it for a buck).

It's stereo, dead wax side a is "V6-5008 SIDE 1 MGS-558-REV", b is "V6-5008 SIDE 2 MGS-559". It's an incredible strange font, on an off note, everything is in print but for an incredibly slanted "R" in "REV" and the "G" in each is cursive. That may well be normal abut as someone new to looking this carefully at vinyl, it's kind of strange to catch

Do you ever head over to Sound Machine in Reading, Mr. Car? They recently had a load of original 90s 4AD and Creation LPs in the racks (including Loveless which they sold for ยฃ70)?

My best guess is it's this. Don't take that for gospel.

Bad news is that for an LP which has been repressed so many times in different guises unless there is something unique about the record itself (such as different label, misprinted track listing, or in the case of VU&N a copy missing 'Sunday Morning') it won't be worth a great deal. I have sold records before without the cover (Dub Landing by Scientist to be specific) and still got a tenner for it - I reckon that'd be about the best you could hope for, perhaps a tad more. Best keep it squire.

Apparently, this was recently repressed:

It's A Girl by Sweet Baby

Which I'm a bit overjoyed about. The original press is hard to come buy and somewhat expensive (not unreasonable but still), so this was a super pleasant surprise. If I'm in the first 250 orders (no indication of if I was or not), it comes with a bonus 7 inch which would be nice too.

EDIT: Once this gets in, I'll own 9 out of my top 100 albums on vinyl which is honestly less than I thought (though 9 were never pressed), and have another 11 of my top 100 on vinyl in my household thanks to my parents' collections. Some of what I don't own is cuz it's bizarrely rare ($100 + for Midnight Organ Fight or $300 + for Hopes and Fears), but others there's really no reason for except I don't yet ($12 for TATE, $15 for PBTT, $12 for the rarest press of Rawhyde).

I find that owning digital music has devalued music.

I don't give a shit about "quality". It either is good quality or it isn't... in other words unless your tone def you can tell the difference between 64kbps and 192kbps, but if it's between 320kbps and lossless, honestly, there's very little difference that the human ear can hear (most high frequencies get chopped and humans can't really hear 20k for example).

Blah blah blah, in other words, I've come to want to own physical music again so that I could look at the liner notes, etc. as I listened and really paid attention to music again. Having music physical I think has helped a little with that.

Plus I have a room full of musical instruments and on the walls goes my vinyl covers (which negates me having something physical, hehehe).

But, yes of course I started out with my favorite records... unless I found something for less than $5 - if I kinda liked it, I'd buy it cause it was so cheap.

Just to let anyone who's interested know - Light In The Attic are just about to re-release this gem:

Deceit by This Heat

Along with their other 2 LPs. It's not the easiest record to find so fill yer boots if you want it - Honest Jon's have just listed it on their site. Happy days.

Well This Heat will certainly be in my top 50, but this reissue would run up to llike ~$50 when all's said and done. Damn Canadian dollar..

Honestly, I've had to stop record shopping in Detroit/ ordering online. It's getting kinda ridiculous...
