TAPLOG I will be writing about my day's listening here, a post for each day. Just getting this started, I'll fill out the structure of the day as it goes and then I will edit in details and thoughts later. Feel free to comment and suggest things just maybe don't give too many suggestions and also really try to sell me on it or I might forget. Oh and if there's anything here you're interested in hearing but you're having difficulty finding, pm me and maybe I can help you find it. 11/5/15 Art Angels by Grimes Then I followed this up with the Improv4Humans podcast, new ep today has musical guest Dan Deacon. It was too distractingly funny though so I had to pause. Got me thinking that I didn't give a close enough listen to Deacon's latest, so let's give that a whirl. Gliss Riffer by Dan Deacon Yeah, I don't know. I like it. But my way in with Deacon was Spiderman of the Rings. I still love that album, because there was a forcefulness to it, and danger and sharp edges and all of that. While the compositions following that album have gotten more intricate, it feels like all the edge has gotten sanded off. I think the songs on this are fine, and I do like a lot of them more than what was on the previous album (and, controversially, a lot of Bromst, which I still need to put on my year chart come to think of it), and would love to experience them live. But I guess it's a combination of the smoothing of the sound and the increased familiarity with who Dan Deacon is that leads to me noticing that there is some sort of nuanced development to his sound, but just not being able to feel it as much. But I wouldn't say it's bad by any means. It's getting too normie in here so now: Flowers Of Evil by Ruth White Oh, this. I love this album. It's one of the many albums that I love that I found through the Creel Pone unofficial reissue label. Lots of musical spoken word that's all been treated to some degree put over synthesizers of varying levels of murkiness. Nothing really in the way of percussion, but in spite of that and all the murk there's still some really clear forms to these songs that makes them seem quite direct. Anyone looking to expand their knowledge of women making far out electronic sounds in the early days of it absolutely must check this one out. I can hear some loud drums being soundchecked at the venue next door now which is simply too distracting so now I'm goin to some talky podcasts, starting with Who Charted. New format is weird but it works for some word listening. But now I need something wordless to go with the working so Precipice by Byron Westbrook This is just some fantastic ambient music right here. But what makes this stand out is that beyond the gorgeous waves of sound, there are all of these weird little elements to the songs, enough to where I've seen this album referred to as electro-acoustic on top of being ambient. What's great about these layers of weird synthesis in the mix is that they're more than just flavor, they're major determinants in the structure. Like in the last track, there's all these gorgeous waves and it's wonderful but then they break apart into some series of notes and the slowness intensifies and I like it a lot. I need more, so KOCH by Lee Gamble This album is still growing on me, a year later. And I still don't know how to describe it. But man oh man I love these timbres. It's some pretty consistent, minimal music. But there's this quality to his music where it's like he's taking something that previously existed and erasing, and the talent is in the space that's created from the erasure. I don't know. I still need more time and more listens. I'm hungry so I'm going to get something going with that while finishing up the Dan Deacon ep of Improv4Humans. I dunno I could imagine a lot of people find this sort of improv comedy to be annoying but this is so much my jam, absolutely loving it. This will be one of those podcast episodes that I actually listen to more than once. Ok now to go through this again so I can figure out what I want to say here Art Angels by Grimes I guess I have a sort of weird relationship with capital p Pop. I enjoy a song here and there but I never really feel compelled to go dive into a whole album. This is a bit different than capital p Pop, with all the indieosyncrasy. But there's still that slick sort of timbre all over the place, and so many filter sweeps. So I do feel put at a distance from this. On the other hand tho, I've seen some people online absolutely losing their shit about how bad this is. And I completely disagree with those folks. This has tons of really fun catchy songs on here. Kill V Maim, Pin, Realiti (which I actually prefer here to the previously released one), Venus Fly, and Scream and Flesh Without Blood are all great as far as I'm concerned. The other songs, nothing strikes me as being especially bad or enough to make me want to skip, but I don't know if I feel a strong pull back to them. I figure I probably won't be pulling out this album in it's entirety all too often (though I'll have it on my phone for a lil bit I think), but I do think this is good stuff. But the overall timbre, like I can never feel at home with this sort of sound, I'll always feel like a tourist with it and so I value the stuff I feel more at home with more. Now let's go with a first listen for something I think I'll feel at home with On Earth by Hans Otte This is another Creel Pone thing that I ordered recently, I'm not sure if there's any copies online. I guess this was some sort of sound art thing that happened in the space pictured on the cover, and man it must have been really cool to be there in person, with all these noises and spoken German coming out of the squares on the ground and also from the ceiling. It starts up and there's a sort of irregular bass throb that gives a pulse to the whole thing, while waves of noise build up from nothing and hang out in the space for a bit. It can get a bit harsh. But I have no problem with that. The structure isn't super overt, very much in the horizontal development mode throughout and I'm more generally aware of change happening than seeing an exact point of it, if that makes sense. Sometimes this sort of thing doesn't work for me so well when it feels like it's just lingering in a certain mode and not pushing into anywhere new, but this uses a small selection of sounds to go all sorts of places, like it gets into a sort of rhythmic thing in the second half of side A with much more... I guess they would be percussive hits? Well, sort of? It's weird. But the focus in aesthetic and constant development in what the piece is is just great to take in. And then Side B sort of repeats the process of Side A, but gets into more feedback drones, it feels similar in shape, but slower and everything hangs a little different in my ear. And more of the German spoken word. Yes, I am at home here. That's it for today on the music front. Going to catch up on adventure time and then get things sorted for the day tomorrow.

I just have some quick thought on things. First off, I finally found the quiet time necessary to check out Graham Lambkin & Michael Pisaro's Schwarze Riesenfalter. It is really fantastic, glad I did. It's going to be a few more listens before I can write something solid on it, but I feel like the general consensus that that was the best thing to come out on Erstwhile in 2015 is correct. I was less successful trying to listen to Keith Rowe & John Tilbury's three and a half hour release from 2015, Enough Still Not To Know. It's an absurdly sparse affairand significant environmental sound interruptions made me give up a couple times. I'll get to it though, seems interesting.

Else Marie Pade's passing made me revisit the compilation Et Glasperlespil, which was actually among the very first early electronic albums I ever bought after reading a very compelling write up on Mimaroglu Music. I was in high school and had no idea what to make of it, and it wasn't until years later that it really clicked with me. There's something so particular about it though, I can't quite put words on it but there's a quality to the music that I don't really see anywhere else. I also realized I never got around to checking out an actual recent thing she did in her 80's, collaborating with Jacob Kirkegaard, who I'm not really familiar with but it seemed to stay true to Pade's earlier material, though it is a bit more diffused and stretched out. Some really stunning stuff. If you do want to check out her stuff, the box set that came out on Important Records a couple years ago covers most everything, though there is a non-electronic sounding thing at the end of Et Glasperlespi, a 20+ minute soundtrack for some ballet thing, that's really worth seeking out as well.

I've been listening to Hamid Drake & Fred Anderson album From The River To The Ocean while writing this post and I think it's pretty damn great.

So, catching up here a bit, disconnected thought time, go: I still don't like this new tortoise album. I do like these new ones from Chippendale/Gustafsson/Pupillo (tho I still need to hear the new Fire! (edit: I listened, it was good!)) and Roly Porter. Station to Station is probably the most solid Bowie album and I'm a dummy for not listening to it sooner. I was underrating that Jib Kidder album from 2015, that's good indie song stuff with multitracked constructed voice. And I forgot how much I liked the Greg Davis track Clouds As Edges (it's a lot). And I'm posting this early Sunday so I'll be editing in the other things I listen to.

Saturday I didn't really listen to much recorded music cause I was seeing all sorts of insanity at this CORRIDOR festival. The major highlight was hearing Raica do this evolving modular synth patch as a soundtrack to this wild, crowd disrupting modern dance thing. First I gotta tell you it's in this huge warehouse space, you get into the main area and then you've gotta go pretty deep in to actually hit the stage. So what happens is this dude from the way back entrance way, throws down this big roll of brown paper, making a sort of brown carpet. And then he goes back to the start, and this lady starts collapse-dancing on him and going limp, and when she hits the ground the man traces her outline with a marker. They repeat this a few times, the man runs outside to get a raincoat for her, which I guess makes her alive again and so she goes back to the entrance and then runs down the brown paper and then they slowly drag the paper into a pile near the stage, and other stuff. It was a whole thing. Raica's modular music soundtrack on it's own would've been ok, but in this context it was elevated, every development there feeling connected to the developments in the weird dance narrative.

I was also super into Ahnnu's set. His recorded stuff I've heard hasn't clicked so much with me, though I see something is there. But I don't know if this is new stuff or what, it seemed pretty different. Like very accessible sounding with straightforwardish beats for the most part, and the sound is stripped of excess kinda? I don't know how to explain it, but I am very very curious to hear what he puts out next. It seems like he's getting onto something really fresh here.

X/O is an artist to watch. She did some visuals for Future Brown I guess? Can't find much info on her, I don't think she has anything released yet or even much in the way of soundcloud business besides a short preview of a thing? But anyways, she seems to be in the whole contemporary beat thing with Amnesia Scanner and Lotic and Arca and whoever else you wanna put in I guess. Her set started with visuals of ice, and the music that sort of used some of the vocabulary of that contemporary beat stuff but the form of it was way abstract. Eventually the ice disappeared revealing the more usual 3d rendered logos with fancy reflections and stuff, and the songs went into more graspable beat driven stuff. The twist comes when she starts singing, with a pleasant sort of female voice that doesn't sound out of place in the pacific northwest and works surprisingly well in this aesthetic too. Though what really makes it work with this aesthetic is the bursts of crazy modulation that go over the voice sometimes. Shit was awesome. Very much looking forward to seeing what she has to release.

And I also really liked Sarah Davachi's set. It was pretty straightforward, just one big drone made up of layers and layers that have little microtonal moves to them. But when it hits that peak and you have all these layers going, and there's all these tiny gestures on top of each other, it feels like such an overwhelming amount of musical content, I dunno she is just great.

There was other stuff that was cool, like Rene Hell's set. But his set was way too short! I think there were technical difficulties, but he seems to be continuing on the whole brainfloss sound, but with more of a direct approach to the compositions than other people working in that sound. I don't know how to describe it exactly, but I am eagerly anticipating whatever he's got coming next. But yeah a whole bunch of people played, and I enjoyed a lot of it, it was a good time. Fingers crossed they do this again next year!

So this caught my eye in the upcoming release section at Forced Exposure. I'm a big nerd for Brian Chippendale, like you've got Mindflayer and Lightning Bolt and Black pus and then all the comics too, I'm basically on board to check out whatever has his name on it at this point. But then you've also got Mats Gustafsson here from Fire! who are pretty great though I'm still dipping my toes in to their whole thing. So his presence, plus this being categorized as jazz and coming out on Trost (they put out the Two City Blues albums last year), I didn't know what to expect exactly, but this has a strong sort of noise rock feel from Chippendale's drumming and Pupillo's distorted bass. Some times in fact it seems like Gustafsson might be just doing processing on the other two? But yeah, there's plenty of chunks of this that don't sound too much different sonically from Lightning Bolt. The difference comes mainly from the intense linear focus and sprawling lengths. The main tracks are divided on my digital copy in chunks over 30 minutes long (no idea how this works on vinyl), and they never really let up. It's not unrelentingly violent or anything, it does evolve into some relatively calmer moments, but so much of the music is about holding onto this intensity and push just a little against the consistency, and you're basically just on the ride for it. 86 minutes is a long time though, I don't think I could handle it if it was just about the brutality. Fortunately there is a sense of fun to the playing, especially when Chippendale pops up with some vocals. Especially in the second track, which does something with incorporating stage banter into music that is just simply delightful. If you like noise rock types of sounds and long durations, I would strongly recommend checking this one out, it's streaming on the bandcamp page now.

So just a quick check in on some music I've purchased/am going to purchase: my copy of the AMM - AMMMusic reissue came in today! It sounds so good, making me rethink my recent preference for The Crypt. Anyone who has an affinity for this album & a record player, hurry and snatch up a copy of this while it's still around.

The Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith album appears to have been pushed back to April 🙁 But at least it's been officially announced now! The first track sounds super lush, you can check it here. I'm super psyched for this one.

Also recently announced is an album with Kassel Jaeger on Shelter Press. He's a contemporary GRM member who has put out some really fantastic stuff on Editions Mego, particularly Toxic Cosmopolitanism which continues to grow on me. He's collaborating with some folks who I am not familiar with, but I am on board to check it out for sure. I'll probably get turned on to their work and end up with a whole bunch of things that need to be checked out. But yeah, that's dropping on the increasingly crowded February 22nd. Kassel Jaeger/Stephan Mathieu/Akira Rabelais - Zauberberg is the full name, should probably mention that.

In the more immediate future, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe has a new album dropping this Friday, though I think it has already leaked. It's called Cognition / Observation, and it's actually just shy of 20 minutes so I won't be able to add it here :(. Should be some real quality listening, though.

New Tim Hecker and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe releases are pretty solid, still need more time with them but I really enjoyed these first listens. I actually wasn't as enamored with the shift in direction on Ravedeath and Virgins as everyone else, but this one was pretty striking to me. Though BE WARNED the leak has the most frustrating gaps between tracks, I'll probably load it all into ableton and fix that and only listen to it there until April lol.

Just some quick thoughts today:

PSA: Always check your local record store's used classical record section for early electronic goodies! I happened to stumble across this compilation Panorama Electronique, which is actually a split off reissue of something that was originally 2LP's. This one has Eimert, Henry, Ligeti, and Posseur (and two other guys I don't know about)! The Eimert piece was really interesting stuff, kinda similar to Stockhausen's Kontakte and made around the same time. Apparently the other piece has Berio, Ferrari, and Xenakis, but it's all material that's accessible on other releases. Not sure if this Eimert thing is anywhere else though so this seems like a good score.

With this Drumm/Lescalleet album, I have finished going thru the Erstwhile/ErstAEU releases of 2015. I think the Drumm/Lescalleet collabs just aren't for me though, I wasn't really into this one or the acclaimed thing from last year. I don't think it's bad or anything less than well done, there's just something specific to the way they approach stasis that just doesn't really work for me, so I don't think I'm gonna be adding it on for my own list tho. Gonna get that Kawaguchi & Kawasaki I listened to yesterday on there though, that one is really special.

So yeah, this was a really fun month of listening. A bit on the unfocused side, a lot of old favorites pulled out and listened to only once. Still did a fair amount of digging in on a few really solid albums though. Think I want to make a bit more of a concerted effort to focus in and around releases/scenes in the next month. I need to push forward on some jazz stuff, and I definitely want to go further digging into the Erstwhile discog. There's just so much to listen to tho...

Hey so this Pauline Oliveros & Ione thing from last year finally came out digitally. It's really cool, starts off mostly just lightly processed and spacialized bits of accordion, but as it goes you get some cool spoken word from Ione and a lot more electronic weirdness from Oliveros, she's still got it. Julia Holter and Circuit Des Yeux live @ Columbia City Theater, 2/4/16

im at a bar and beach house is on the stereo and in the back there is a theater where I'm going to see Circuit des Yeux and Julia Holter in a bit. It's sold out and the ppl here already feel way more "Seattle" than any other preshow crowd I've seen, it's pretty funny. Because it makes sense.

circuit des yeux just played. she came out in like mom pants, a striped shiry, and hair over her eyes. Just her crazy weird baritone voice and an acoustic guitar with effects. she started with some shorter songs and I'm all like "hey, this is cool", but then the penultimate track was this huge epic thing and by the end of it I was a convert. I didn't really click with her 2015 album but now I will absolutely be giving it a serious relisten. the epic track was so epic that her microphone ended up not working at the end of it, so she was like "im goin acoustic" and the crowd was so quiet and respectful and allowed the beautiful thing to happen. so fucking good.

julia holter, holy shit. this tour is just getting started I think, so if she's playing near you and you have any inclination to see her, you absolutely must. she is a goddamn rockstar, like she has bono's super power where it feels like he's looking right at you, but then all the between song banter is charmingly introverted a little. the band she has is amazing and really goes in deep on the weird bits in the songs. the venue had a piano so she finished up the set on that, there was an amazing version of Betsy On The Roof. it was all so good. fantastic show.
