Surprised there hasn't been more talk about the new Animal Collective. What did everyone think? I remember Tap predicting it would herald a big period of discussion a la the Grimes record towards the end of last year, especially given that a lot of us on the forum are fans. I wasn't very pleased with it, but I figured people besides the two of us posting in our journals would pipe up a bit. Anyone?

Oh I dunno if I thought it'd be on the Grimes level of discussion, just more that it's fun when something pops up like that that gets lots of takes. I'm gonna do an in-depth write up soon, but I love it a lot. I think there's a lot more nuance to the dual vocals in the Panda Bear written tracks than people give credit for. I don't really think it's all hocketing, some of it meets that definition but I think the goal is more to do acoustic vocal effects rather than the electronic ones of the past. And that opens up a lot of potential. There's something really peculiar to it in Recycling that I still need to figure out how to talk about. And then there's all the other stuff like Geologist's contributions, those seem to really benefit from the more focused/in-focus approach to the sound on this album. I mean it's still hard to say exactly what is him but the rhythmic embellishments that come in on Spilling Guts in the second half, I'd wager stuff like that. Though he is responsible for the sax in Lying In The Grass so stuff like the piano in On Delay might be him too. I dunno I'm still all scattered on it, I've been listening to it a lot tho and will continue to (until I take a break before seeing them live on the 5th).

to be honest, i still haven't listened to it. i was really disappointed by their previous album, and the things i've read about this one haven't hurried me to the album. i will listen soon though.

As I (very) briefly stated on the previous page, it made for a fun enough - if superficial - first listen, which I didn't exactly expect after the dire affair that was Centipede Hz. I can't say more than that though, haven't re-listened yet, but I spent a nice enough hour with it the other day.

Various Auras: A Bird's-Eye View Into A.../ Prurient

It's quite a bit to digest at once, but as of now this is the most fucking incredible shit I've heard this year. Hits me right in that sweet spot that only the most immersive and mind-suffocating kind of noisy droning dark ambient fuckery can

I rambled on about it on its album page on BEA. As a pretty big fan, I wasn't disappointed by the album at all. At the same time I can understand why the reviews have been pretty mixed at best and why it subsequently hasn't been talked about all that much. There's nothing about it that would stand out in comparison to their other stuff, nothing too significant (Centipede Hz, considering how it divided the fans, still had a very distinct sound to it and was different to their previous efforts). There are times on the album that I wish they'd expand on a certain idea or sound present (Lying in the Grass - though I love that track nonetheless, Bagels in Kiev, etc.). On a positive note however, they haven't forgotten how to write a fun and catchy tune, and I think this album has enough of those to keep me pleased. I genuinely think Golden Gal is one of their best "pop" songs yet.
I haven't seen them live yet, I really need to correct that mistake this year. Again they aren't any nearer than Berlin, but why not.

I will say one more thing, having re-listened to Centipede Hz these days, I thought it held up great, I actually find it to be very close to any of their 2000s output. It's a busy and messy album, but not at all devoid of melody and hooks and I find that the two sides actually work wonderfully against one another.

I wrote about it in my music diary. It was fine, I wasn't blown away. It sounded a lot like Animal Collective trying to sound like the idea of "Animal Collective" rather than just organically making what came to them. It was frenetic and all over the place, as is expected in many of their albums, but it didn't feel totally cohesive. I didn't hate the album, there were some really good songs (I dig "FloriDada", "Golden Gal", and "Recycling") but the rest just kind of fell flat. Like I said though, not bad, but not great.

Same. I wasn't too hyped about it in the first place, and then it got fairly average to negative reviews. I'll give it a listen eventually, but I feel like AC's time has come ๐Ÿ™

I'm probably in the minority but I'm really enjoying the new AnCo, may even grow to be my favourite, I've been hit and miss often about their stuff, the Fall Be Kind EP being my favourite I guess, but this has me hooked (for now at least).

Elsewhere, people should be hitting up these for indie pop goodness.

I initially had a lot of problems with Centipede Hz, but have come around to enjoy it (though not on same level as previous output), so I'm trying to give Painting With some time. With my initial listen, I was definitely disappointed. It's not as much of a cluttered mess as Centipede, but still manages to feel cluttered. Golden Gal is one of the few times they let a song breathe, and it works very well. Through repeated listens, I'm liking it more than I initially did. I don't love the production though, and the double vocals of Avey and Panda can be a bit much at times.
