Just realized this album is produced by Danger Mouse...
Any thoughts on this? He's done some great production for Hip Hop over the years, and Gnarls Barkley as well.
I think it could work for them. I didn't like his influence on Ordinary Love or Invisible for U2 (I'm talking production quality not song quality... listen to those two releases and then listen to The Miracle of Joey Ramone, for example).
Having said that, RHCP's sound might lend better to Danger Mouse.
Dark Necessities sounds good... but shoot now that you bring it up it has some heavy compression or something on it that dulls the sound a bit (similar to the U2 releases I didn't like). Curious if this plays a role in why I think their sound is a bit more mature... it's less in your face (even the parts that could be like Flea's slap bass is pretty well compressed).

I agree. Maybe a bit too compressed, but makes sense considering his Hip Hop background.

I haven't listened to the album and I can't say I really plan to, but Danger Mouse is one of the most frustrating producers in all of music in that he's obscenely talented and has crafted some of my favorite beats of all time (The Mouse and the Mask anyone?) but far too often he resorts to the most gratingly beige sort of production (Turn Blue anyone?), well below what he's clearly capable of
Having said that appears that RHCP fans aren't the bottom of the brains list (not that I think this is terribly scientific), but interesting data (comparing high school kids' SAT scores with what's frequently listened to on their ipods... probably no more than a school or two data sources though).
whoa. that's a trip. i think it says more about trends than anything else, but it's interesting. there are a few artists there that surprise me. the top ten looks like this:

Totally agree with the bolded. Hopefully this is a good move for them as RHCP sound has been totally in your face.
There was talk of Flea wanting to get into electronic music (part of why he did AMOK), so I'm curious to see if they will do a more mature totally different RHCP for this record... and if so, will it be any good?
