Having shifted about ยฃ100 worth of records and CDs on Discogs in the last few days - including one reggae LP I've never thought much of to some lass in France for ยฃ50 - I've decided the reinvest the lot and ordered a hatload of new records. More on them when they come, but picked up today:

Any Other City by Life Without Buildings

73/100. Repress picked up on the cheap, so much so that my original CD copy I bought of this back in 2007 (which I've now listed to sell if anyone's interested) is worth more.

Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash by The Replacements

Interested to see that Twin/Tone have repressed all the Replacements LPs. This was always my favourite.

The best of Scott Walker and the Walker Brothers (cd)

It actually belongs to the Mrs but I can play it.

Driving through the Thames Delta (that's Essex to those who care) and came across an antiques market on a farm. Got this for a fiver:

Tweez by Slint

Original Jennifer Hartman (European) press. Don't tell Keith. Never heard it before but thought I'd give it a spin. Don't like it so I've cleaned it up and chucked it on Discogs to see if anyone will bite. In the meantime I'll bop away to this, which cost me a quid from the same place:

Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions

A 45 is a single, love. This is a thread about albums you bought/acquired. Start another thread - or better still why don't you start a musical diary and pop all yrrr country gubbins in there. Would only be polite as the last thing anyone wants to do is wade through any more flag-wavin' thigh-slappin' saccharine-flavoured treacle. Can't you just let the poor man rest in peace?

^^^ I can understand the beginning of your message here, but the ending of it, to me, is where your train of thought not only jumped the track that it was on, but it crashed and burned too. Because I am a new fan of his pretty much, I am still just getting started with him. Also because I didn't become a fan of him until after his going forward, I have all that I missed out on to make up for which is not just years, but decades. So to answer your question, I have a question of my own. What makes you think that what I have to say about him would be any kind of disturbance to him in the first place? If anything, I pray that my keeping him around only brings that flawless smile of his back to his face! Other singers who aren't here anymore are still being played by their fans so why should Billy Joe be any different? I still couldn't be anymore ashamed of how late I am in getting into him anyways. I envy the fans of his who got to meet him. According to what I have seen them say about him, I've missed out on a beautiful person and I hate it!!! ๐Ÿ˜ข ๐Ÿ˜ข ๐Ÿ˜ข

God bless you and his family and his other fans always!!!

Holly

P.S. And with music being purchased the way that it is being purchased these days, how much longer until an album is not what a set of songs is labeled anymore anyways?

Looks like I've rustled your jimmies a little here, Holly. Allow me to retort, but please understand this isn't in an attempt to upset you, it's just to debate the issues you've raised:

Good start. Look forward to seeing future BJR single acquisitions confined to another thread.

My train is on the straight and narrow path, poppet. Calling at Sanity, Reasoned Argument, Mental Clarity and finally stopping at Rational Central. I fear yours derailed a long time ago and is running towards oblivion. Your problem you see is that it's blindingly obvious that BJR is your 'flavour of the month' (or your 'newest favorite singer' as you so eloquently put it) to such an extent he's usurped your previous girl crush (you can only have one favourite surely?) You are wracked with guilt for not getting into his music sooner. As such (and because of your obsessive compulsive personality, which we've seen on countless previous occasions with a certain Mr. Otto) you feel duty-bound to consume everything he's done as quickly as possible. Gluttony is a sin. Coincidentally, I have no issue with Mr. Royal. He seems like a perfectly normal failed R'n'R singer who turned to country to give his career a kick in the pants. I have no axe to grind. He's just rather bland to these weathered ears.

Hope he wasn't cremated in that case. But in all seriousness, I was just remarking that your level of consumption of his material seems a trifle over-the-top and directly influenced by your need to play a guilty form of 'catch-up' inspired as much by your love of his music as by the fact you didn't get into him when he was still with us. I very much doubt he's up there looking down at you disapprovingly, but what about all the day-one fans who might be desperate to lay their hands on the records you're now snapping up like Doomsday's round the corner? Do you stop to think that some might not be able to afford them? Why don't you buy some extra ones and donate them to those poor souls who've lost someone they've admired for much longer than you? That'd be a better way to celebrate his memory surely.

Quite right, it shouldn't be any different, and when Bowie died I cried when I listened to his songs in the car, bought a copy of Station To Station, gave it a couple of days to sink in then moved on. But there's fandom and there's Hollydom, where you take things to such extremes that you become obsessed to the point where others consider you to be (and don't take this the wrong way) something of an emotionally unstable stalker-in-waiting. I wonder if James Otto approves of his no.1 obsessive fan buying someone else's records. Will you feel guilty in a couple of months time that you've been neglecting listening to James for Billy? Do you think he'd understand? Forgive you, even? Can fandom to the extent you display ever be polygamous?

A deadly sin is that.

There are tons of beautiful people in this world who have passed on. People who die trying to flee oppression. People who fight to protect those they love or the country they believe in. People who are just minding their own business selling CDs outside a shop. Unborn children free from blemish. There's beauty everywhere, beyond the realms of a stetson and an acoustic guitar. Open your mind, try things alien to you musically (especially seeing as you're on this site from which you seem to take so little, despite it being the richest resource of new music I've ever discovered). The Good Lord only gave you one life to live on Earth - honour Him by living it. Expand your horizons (with His guidance if that helps) and your eyes will shine with all the beauty, art, creativity and wonder of His world.

And may Jah bless and free you from mental slavery.
