Often it's just about immersing myself in a mood. It can be a catharsis of just letting myself feel a little bit existential dread like in radiohead or joy division. Or it can be the vibrant yearning nostalgic sound of Carly Rae Jepsen's last album. Or maybe I just wanna listen to some big ugly rhythmic beats and spacey electronics because I am thinking about a sci-if movie or show I watched recently and I wanna indulge in that atmosphere for a while.
