In the 80s British metal/hard rock was very prominent with bands like Saxon, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but the 90s seemed to only concern indie or brit pop. I know the metal genre wasn't as popular in that decade but there must have been some decent hard rock/metal/grunge bands from Britain??

Metal as a genre in the 90s was incredible. With the 80s, you got the birth of death metal, black metal, doom metal, sludge metal, so many of the extreme metal subgenres, and in the 90s, you got them refined and saw them mature and really come into form. Granted, a lot of these genres were populated by bands from countries other than England (especially Norway when it comes to black metal), but there were still some British bands (especially in the genre of doom) that were important in the 90s.

I really like a band called Little Angels. I've kind of come to think of them as a hard rock band with a bit of an "indie sensibility". They might actually be my favourite hard rock band at this stage.
'Gold Against The Soul' by the Manics is also a favourite. Definitely more of a hard rock album than an alt-rock one ("literate hard rock", it might be described as, maybe).
Another band called Scheer put out an excellent album called 'Infliction'. Alt-metal is prob the best way to describe it but it's pretty unique.
Also used to like a band called Skunk Anansie but their stuff hasn't really held up imo. Worth a listen though probably.
Edit : forgot 'Replenish' by Reef. Also excellent - kind of a surf-rock / stoner-rock album. Always loved a couple of tracks but have recently come to appreciate the rest of it as well.
Bolt Thrower was a pretty good death metal band of the 90s from the UK. Carcass started in the 80s, but they had some strong releases in the 90s as well.
Actually, metal (along with new age if you can believe that) is what saved the 90s for me (all the stuff in the middle between really mellow and really harsh was pretty much throwaway).
Lots of great metal bands in the 90s, but the shift was away from the UK and into the US.
