"Cans and Brahms" - Yes/Fragile
Based on the third movement of Brahms 4th Symphony
Eric Carmen's megahit "All By Myself" --the vocal melody is based on the main theme from the second (slos) movement of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto. I always hated that song--so when I started getting into Classical and took a liking to Rachmaninoff's piano music, I still couldn't gag down that movement. Carmen ruined it for me forever.
Walter Murphy's disco hit "A Fifth of Beethoven" was of course, directly derivative of Ludwig's 5th symphony.
I don't know how I forgot this album until now. I'm not positive but I think every song is based on a piece of classical music or Opera. The ones I really like are Madame Butterfly and Carmen. This isn't Malcolm McLaren best album though, duck rock is better. Unless you count Sex Pistols.
The guitar that kicks of "Because" by The Beatles is sort of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" backwards. John heard Yoko playing Moonlight on the piano, asked her to play it backwards, and wrote "Because" around it.
The chorus of Billy Joel's "This Night" is based off of the second movement of Beethoven's "Pathetique" Sonata _________________ Progressive Rock
