I know a couple of guys I'm in bands with who are in their 40s. They've been exposed to loud music since they were in their early 20s, they have never worn any ear protection and swear they have no damage at all. This may be true but I've also heard of people who smoke 40 a day and are 100. Dont risk it. Some people are just lucky or have the right genes.

Hear, hear (no pun intended).

I'm lucky that despite years of playing live, DJing, going to gigs and listening to music I've not done any lasting damage to my ears. I thought I had back in my 20s - I remember going to see The Cooper Temple Clause back in 2001 and ended up with tinnitus for a week. I was forever trying to press the flap of skin just outside my earhole back and forth to try and get everything back to normal - and I was genuinely petrified that my ears were permanently fucked but luckily it was only temporary. From that moment it was earplugs all the way until my gigging and clubbing days passed me by.

I get people's penchant for loud music - there's an adrenaline rush you get from it, it takes over, it compels you to pogo or bust shapes or whatever. But you can get that same sensation when wearing plugs - let the bass rattle your bones and the thud of a kick drum make your knees knock, just look after them lugs.

Great advice. I was a dead head touring the country the last thing I thought of when going to all those concerts was wearing earplugs. Wish I had. I have constant ringing which was exacerbated by a long bout of Lyme disease, but I had it before that it just made it worse.

Well, I hope for your sake that somehow you have extra nimble cilia in your ears or are someway else immune. The fact is that it just starts randomly for most people, and once you get it, it (and the hearing damage you've suffered) never heals, never goes away.

That sucks. Stay strong my friend. I spend as much time as I can in ambient noise and I can forget I have it (except for my difficulties with hearing). Silence is the worst. (Well, there's no such thing anymore is there?)
