I've wanted to do this for a while: listen to the work of a producer chronologically. I've begun by creating a list for Daniel Lanois' work. There's probably a few in there that he's not the sole producer on. I might have a read of his biography again called, Soul Mining, while I listen through. It's turned up a few titles that I don't recall him mentioning when I read the book a few years back. It would be a hard thing to quantify, though. Producer, is such a slippery term. You could praise a producer for having a recognisable sound, or condemn them for forcing their sound on everything they do. Some producers' genius is purely in getting great performances out of an artist, and are otherwise invisible. Some are consistent, and some are shape-shifting over time.

Well, for Albini, he is usually in the notes as a "recording engineer" rather than a producer. He's been doing the same efficient recording for 30 years now. His sound is easy to recognize and still sounds great.

Consider this album from this year.

It's the same noisy-punk-hardcore that has made him famous over the years.

But also in 2017 he produced an album in 10 days (in true Albini fashion) with the electronic artist Ben Frost.
