Benny The Butcher - Tana Talk 3 (2018)
Getting major Lox vibes. The most technically adept of the Griselda crew probably doesn't have the charisma of Gunn or Conway, but is still an entertaining presence throughout. Production is solid - strings- and keys-laden, soulful New York boom bap that sounds at once subdued and luxurious - but rarely wows, and there isn't very much variation of tempo or vibe across the whole tape, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but which means that each slice of hookless, wintery, hard-nosed, NYC revivalism is pretty indistinguishable from the others. My favourite songs on any Griselda release tend to be the ones where more than one of the crew turns up to rap, if only for some textural variety, and this is no different. I want a group album. Regardless, this is still consistently dope, to the point that it might be in my top ten rap albums of 2018. Worth checking out, for sure.
