I don't think this is perfect compared to his earlier material back in his hayday. There are a few moments I was left somewhat hanging. But man this was actually great. If there was any way to continue in this decade, it would be with electronics. Kinda wish Gil was allowed to expand on these types of sounds. Also the length of this flies by. Like a half hour breezes with a snap of a finger.
So even though my grade would be an 80, this is one of those albums that can grow in my books as well as become a cult classic within the 2020's or 2030's. Hell even beyond.
The Monitor by Titus Andronicus
I used to like this band and this album a lot but I have to admit I get a bit tired by them: their combination of raw punk (especially the singing) and their use of traditional instruments like bagpipes and flutes makes them sound a bit like the Pogues but I have to say now like bad pogues especially since their tracks are just too long to make them interesting enough.
Completely agree. Used to go to this bar near my old condo that used to play this a lot & I quite enjoyed it in that setting. So I was quite surprised when I put it on last week & it sounded like that Bright Eyes dude fronting a milquetoast band of Pogue posers. I'm pretty sure 1Chief will NOT love this one. 🤣

I LOVE Black Mountain so I'm bummed that u don't think that album is top tier stuff. Their early stuff truly rules, but it's been a while & I've never heard this one.
Also... don't give up on either that Ty Segall & Thee Oh Sees album. those are both authentic, bad assed psychedelic garage rock that just get better with each spin. They're both the real deal

I grew up on this kind of stuff. Zeppelin/70s hard rock inspired no frills rock n'roll. And this is a GREAT one. Black Mountain just get it. The joy of Deep Purple's chugging organ. The thrill of Grace Slick's piercing soprano. This is the soundtrack for going with friends to get a six pack of Bush at the local packie on a Saturday afternoon with not a care in the world. Just happy to be together and getting psyched to watch some Walking Dead reruns later that evening before hitting the town. A common denominator for high school "burnouts" everywhere that grew up on Sabbath, Deep Purple, & Zeppelin. But this isn't some retread. Black Mountain bring their own spin on this material. An inspired freshness. A lot of it comes from their secret weapon - Amber Webber. She can belt with the best of 'em yet it's never over the top. A very tasteful and tasty slab of basic rock n' roll that puts a smile on my face and ice cold beer in my hand.
RIYL: Black Crows, QOTSA, and of course 70s Hard Rock

I love all the references you make and I actually hear them in this album: the only thing to me is that it is not completely of the same quality (in my view) as those references at least not on the whole of the album: Radiant Heart, Let Spirits Ride and The Way To Gone are really good.

The REAL Tilly loves this even more than her self-titled LP. Making this probably her favorite album ever.
I'm a bit disappointed though with this more disco/dance/pop/mainstream direction and think it's a step down form her self-titled album which I liked a lot.
Both are good, but her self-titled album was a bit more weird and eccentric and FUNNY which I really liked. I think it's one of the best pop albums ever. Body Talk is a bit more cynical and darker.

It came out in October and it’s called Honey, honestly can contest both the s/t & the Body Talk series for her best without breaking a sweat. This 2010 comp introduced Shangaan electro, one of the coolest 21st century genres, to the world stage. Put traditional Shangaan music from South Africa and high-tempo EDM together and this is the result. One of the most fun and most danceable records of the year. 4/5.
It's a great comp, but it's not even the best the genre has to offer. So if you like it, the best Shangaan electro record I've heard is this one from 2015:
I make no secret of it. My favorite music was spawned in the 80s, and my favorite label is SST. So I can't believe I haven't heard this before because it's amazing. If you like Firehose and 80s American Underground stuff in general, this is an incredible find. Thanks 1Chief! (Although it really should be higher in your chart! 😉 )
