The Dynasty: Roc La Familia by Jay-Z
Much stronger than it gets credit for - Beanie Sigel and Memphis Bleek were both technically sound, economical rappers who could run rings around pretty much any other major rapper's protégés, and they both have some of this album's most vivid, memorable moments, while Jay steadfastly refuses to phone it in despite giving up a large portion of the runtime to rappers who weren't already household names for the first time in his career. He remains nimble and wordy throughout, whilst keeping his content unapologetically street for the last time in his career, a decision that undoubtedly suits both Beans and Bleek to a tee. The Kanye-produced (his debut beat, I believe), Scarface-featuring 'This Can't Be Life' is essentially a dry run for 'Song Cry', only somehow superior, and 'I Just Wanna Love You' finds The Neptunes offering up the sort of bright, irresistible, clipped funk bounce that made Clipse's debut one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made, only this came 18 months prior. It's not without flaws (the R. Kelly collab is bland, regardless of what we now know about him; the Rick Rock beats try to capture the sound of Dre on 2001, but lack the requisite melodic shine, whilst not necessarily suiting Jay's fast-rapping style), but they are few and forgivable. This is easily second-tier Jay, below only Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, and Vol. 3, and better than it has any real reason to be, given its status as a crew/label showcase. Highly recommended.
