Now Pat's What I Call Music!

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know

Link

So strange to remember Tracey Ullman as a singer, I just can't buy it in a way?

I don't mind this at all to be honest, it's middle of the pack for now and I've played it a few times and it's growing on me more and more.

I just can't picture Tracey Ullman as a singer...

Will Powers - Kissing With Confidence

Link

So apparently Will Powers was a photographer called Lynn Goldsmith, who made this personality and album around mental health awareness.

None of these names mean anything to me at all, the 80's were a strange one...

Not too bad a tune though, even if I will completely forget about it by next week.

I admire your grit in undertaking this task. As I was around at the time buying 7" & LP 's in vinyl, I remember buying a whole lot of crap mixed in the Excellent music of the decade. I am sure you'll get the Birdy Song sooner or later to name but one, which will make you cringe.

Good Luck!

Haha, thank you! I know it's a mad challenge but I'm sticking with it for now, I know there's some crazy stuff much further down the line but at least it's been reasonably decent thus far...

Genesis - That's All

Link

This is much more like it, I've been on a bit of a Genesis kick lately and this is right up there as one of their bangers for me.

Get's in my head a lot, maybe not my favourite Genesis effort, but easily cracks the top 5 at this moment of time, jumping in at number 4.

This is off their self titles album which has made it's way onto my 1983 chart.

The Cure - The Love Cats

Link

Different gravy here, The Cure are obviously fantastic and this is easily one of my favourites so far, one of their poppier efforts, but excellent nonetheless.

After much debating I've actually decided it's number 1 currently, pushing Men at Work off the top spot, it was definitely gonna crack the current top 5 but I think it's probably my favourite on the original Now album, not by much, but it's done enough!

A big call, for those of you still crazy enough to be following along!

Simple Minds - Waterfront

Link

Another band well known to me, they've got some tunes alright, this isn't one of my favourites and it's an unusual choice for these types of albums I feel.

Still solid enough to jump into the early top 20 for the time being.

Feature's on their 1984 album Sparkle In The Rain, which makes 62nd place in my year chart.

Culture Club - Victims

Link

A second offering from Culture Club on this album and it doesn't do all that much for me I'm afraid, give me more Karma Chameleon any day instead, falls in at the lower end of the scale.

After 30 days the original Now album is now fully ranked by me, The Cure deservedly early leaders.

Tomorrow it's on to 1984 and Now 2!

Queen - Radio Ga Ga

Link

So we kick off Now Volume 2 with a big hitter in Queen, the first Queen track to make it into the Now series.

I enjoy parts of Queen, they have some banger and obviously they're absolutely massive, plus I have heard nearly all of their albums (potentially have actually heard all of them but I know there's a lot...)

This is good, not one of my favourites but good nonetheless and heads into the top 20 for the time being.
