The bigger the better, but artwork is compressed to about 500x500 pixels on BEA as otherwise it can make pages too big to download (especially on mobile and with more than one album on a page). Square corners are also preferred as it makes the layout more consistent.

I also use "https://img.youtube.com/vi//maxresdefault.jpg" if I could find the highest resolution of an album cover on a YouTube Thumbnail, and then I crop the one-colored horizontal edges.
Ben Dodson's Apple Music Artwork Finder is great for finding 3000x3000 or at least 1400x1400 resolution album covers, but first you gotta check in Discogs if Apple Music has the album cover of the very first release (This case usually happens with much older releases).
