Romanelli,
I agree with you in preferring Laura Marling. I've been a Marling fan for years and I'm not feeling the Phelps song. But LTSings is still entitled to her opinion, right? And she said she didn't like Marling's voice, not just use of the b word. Personally, I like it when people with worldviews different from mine, and different from the critical consensus, are included and involved.
LTSings,
We get it that you like music that praises Jesus, and you don't like obscene lyrics. That's fine. But can you switch it up a little bit and suggest something with a different topic, and/or a different genre?

Don't know if I'm looking at a large patch of wool on the wall or a hornet's nest, but yeah my vote here is easy. The Phelps song is fine, but it would work a whole better if it embraced a rawer, live-feeling sound. Marling in my ears can do no wrong at this point, and this is one of the lovelier cuts off Patters in Repeat.
For the complaints about the lyrical content of this song, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised about the style of her previous album, Songs for our Daughter (though be forewarned, there are still some mildly naughty words).

This game was for the best songs of 2024, so I picked my four favorite songs of 2024. If the topic were something else, maybe I would pick something else.

It's okay. She dislikes most music that isn't about Jesus and finds much of what users here choose to listen to obscene and offensive. She'll remind you of that. A lot.
Don't like her voice? Fine.
But dismissing music because of a single word without even considering the context is sad. Especially since she's not using it as an insult to any person...she's using it positively to say that her life is great. So you dismiss a mother writing a song of love to her daughter because she says "bitchin'"... that's severe. And yeah. At least that song isn't yet another of the 8 million retreaded songs about Jesus. We get it. He had a famous dad and supposedly died for our sins. Cool. Now please write a song about something else. Anything else.
(THAT should offend you. Not Laura Marling saying that life is good.)
Quote: | Laura Marling said: |
Last night in your sleep, you started crying
I can't protect you there, though I keep trying
Sometimes you'll go places I can't get to
But I've spoken to the angels who'll protect you
Because you're mine
They cast their golden light across this child
I'll take that over
Quote: | David Phelps said: |
They laid His battered corpse
There on that borrowed stone-cold bed
And I'm the guard they chose
To make sure He stayed dead
.....All day. Every day. |
You have a right to your likes and dislikes and your reasons for liking and disliking songs and so do I. The lyrics you quoted above from the David Phelps song are a necessary part of the story, and the ending would not be as happy without it. Words like the "B" word are never necessary in any song. Any songwriter can get their point across just fine without words like that. And I don't like that kind of language. It's an automatic turn off to me when I hear it in any song, or movie, or TV show, or see it in print in a book.
