There are evocative and legendary music venue scattered around the world and London, where I live has had its fair share. The Marquee, Town & Country Club, Crawdaddy, The Astoria, The Mean Fiddler, all gone now but a few still remain including the legendary 100 Club where I saw Beth Rowley last night.
It’s never been an all time favourite venue of mine, the stage is placed really awkwardly for one thing, but it’s got a great atmosphere and well-appointed bars and since it got aircon, you aren’t sweating your b******s off in this basement club.
I’ve seen Beth play before with a full band and she rocks. Last night was her, her harmonica and a guitarist so a far more intimate gig with maybe 250 people there. I found the gig very moving especially the gospel / spiritual songs that she did and her amazing voice suits these songs really well.
All in all, a lovely night despite the trains going into Waterloo totally messed up and therefore a convoluted journey home
Saw a couple of great bands last night at Patchworks.
The Intransigents, who i have spoken about before, were supporting The Long 90's who are a fabulous act with a stellar guitarist who reminded me a little of Lindsey Buckingham playing.
The Long 90's have a Richmond Fontaine / The Jayhawks feel to them. All their own material. which is very good + a cover of Old Man by Neil Young to finish the night
The Staines Lammas Brass Band playing at the Walled Garden in Sunbury, just down the road from me. Lovely setting and a great way to while away a couple of hours.
Saturday night saw another visit to a great club in Hackney, North London, The Moth Club, this time to see the wonderful The Bevis Frond
I've been following the Frond since the late 80's and my word are they starting to look their age but what doesn't get old is the pyrotechnic guitar skills of Nick Saloman.
Great gig, what I could see of it. Unbelievably crowded, and incredibly warm, I'd estimate at least 40 degrees but maybe hotter. So many people going in and out of the venue just to cool off. It didn't spoil the gig bit it could have been more pleasant TBH
I have to say a rather hit and miss gig last night from Sun Ra And His Arkestra at the wonderful Union Chapel here is sunny London Town
When they hit it was fantastic, mainly their more mainstream numbers but too often they went off into free form jazz, which I don't mind but when you have 14 musicians all taking turns to free form it gets a little tooooooo much.
Anyway. Glad that I saw them and the Chapel is a tremendous venue

Btw he is nearly as prolific as Bob Pollard: if I would add the scores of all his albums together he would be my favorite artist.

Is a great album (contender for mt album of the year). Everything that Nick does is pure class.
Just look at my number one of this year. But I must admit I don't him as long as you: I only discovered him in 2018 by listening to his album of that year We're Your Friends, Man.
