Okay... saying this probably isn't going to make me very popular, but the way I personally see it, the only way you end up with these two tracks as the final choices for "song of the year" is if people are voting against songs they don't like, and not voting for songs they do like. (Which is not unlike US electoral politics in recent years, I might add.) People have to stop doing that!
Maybe the problem is that the phpBB polling functionality isn't sufficiently flexible to beat this tendency, or maybe it's that too many people who like albums (generally speaking) don't actually like traditional pop music anymore... or maybe they never did, for all I know. Regardless, I've got a list of 100 albums from last year in a fully-annotated chart, which probably represents over 1,000 individual tracks, and... I know people won't like this, but I'd personally prefer to listen to every single one of those tracks to these two, and it's not even all that close.
So if I'm the deciding vote, then... why am I the deciding vote? That's silly. I shouldn't be the deciding vote โ I shouldn't even be voting! Hopefully someone will come along and tie it back up again.
But if I'm going to be the deciding vote, I have to go with the track that has some singing on it, some dynamics, some electric guitars... things like that. I like jazz well enough (probably more than "Windmill Scene" if I'm being honest), and the Mary Halvorson album is a good jazz album, but this isn't "jazz album of the year," it's "song of the year." So if I'm to pick between these two tracks that I really do not like all that much, which (again) is probably how we got to this choice in the first place... sorry, but I have to go with the other one.
