Top 99 Music Albums of 2025

Look, I realize that if you were to actually listen to many of the albums on this chart yourself, you would detect a certain vague similarity in approach, instrumentation, and vocal style between them. But I'm sort of hoping that you'll overlook that, just as a favor to me personally.

It's like my mom always said, "if it walks like Lush, talks like Lush, rocks like Lush, and has Lush's lead singer doing vocals, it has to rocket straight to the top of your annual best-albums chart." And of course, when I say that she "always said" that, naturally I mean she never actually said this at all. Regardless, the statement still rings true — to be far, the Miki Berenyi Trio are actually more of a "tripgazer" act, possibly because multi-instrumentalist Oliver Cherer is involved along with Miki and Kevin "Moose" McKillop. (McKillop used to be in Moose, you see.) Many, if not most of the tracks here resolve themselves into psychedelia-tinged dance grooves, but with lots of guitars. And just look at that album cover! It could be a bunch of bananas, for all we know.

Probably not as fantastically great as the previous Stargazer Lilies album, "Cosmic Tidal Wave," but really, how do you top a cosmic tidal wave? You can't. And they're a shoegaze band, so we already know they love pedals. Nevertheless, they're probably the finest recording artists operating in America today, as long as you like reverb. A lot. Maybe too much.

This debut LP came as a complete surprise, probably because it's two guys from of-all-places Alabama who have a completely inappropriate band name and a "concept" album here whose theme would have you thinking this is a collection of Gregorian chants. Instead, it's sensational, easily the best Debut LP of 2025, and since there's been no Asteroid No.4 album this year, it's the best spacegazer record too (though that's only because I've been treating the Stargazer Lilies as more of a "classic shoegaze" band). So... well done, guys! By the way, the cover image is a photo of the Emmanuel Head Daymark on Holy Island near the Lindisfarne monastery, in case you're the sort of person who keeps track of such things. Also, the closing track, "Morning Bell," is definitely not a cover of the Radiohead tune from "Kid A." (Which is too bad, since I'd probably like it a lot better than the original.)

It's just impossible not to like this band. I would probably like them even if they didn't make records at all, and just sat around all day playing Minecraft.

This is the first Chameleons album in 24 years, and unlike 2001's "Why Call It Anything", this one has a proper title. But it lacks two of the original bandmembers — specifically, the late John Lever on drums, and their apparently-still-somewhat-pissed-off guitarist Dave Fielding. You can tell Dave is missing too, as his replacement (Stephen Rice) doesn't seem to have, or want to use, Dave's vast plethora of delay and reverb effects. But it's a very good album nevertheless, and it's not like they're recording everything "dry," since that would just be silly.

"Keepsake" was good, and "Giving the World Away" was really good, but this one is truly great. All female pop/rock singers should sound like this! She sounds more like The Sundays than ever, and not just because her voice is similar (which of course is a good thing in itself). This album makes me feel like it's 1993 again, only without all the major life mistakes!

It's not *quite* as immediately appealing as her 2023 debut album, but close. I suspect this will still be in my personal Top Ten at the end of the year. If not, you can always have me arrested.

They're billing this as a "throwback" to their 80s/90s-era stuff, and some are calling it a "return to form," but I actually think this is a lot better than their earlier material. However, I do think that if you're going to make concessions, you should try to have the most intense lighting you can get - the moon by itself isn't going to get the job done.

This is just a 5-song EP, but this Minneapolis dreamgaze band just keeps getting better with each release, and let's not forget that she's a different color than most of us, who tend to be more within the pink-brown color range. So while I'm not saying that ranking her outside the Top Ten would be discriminatory, the fact is I just prefer to be on the safe side.

Suede fans got lots of new material in 2025, what with their Record Store Day release "Sci-Fi Lullabies Vol.2" and MOJO Magazine's "Outsiders" demo and live rarities compilation. And as everyone knows, I myself am on record as stating that Suede has never made a bad album. So when we heard we were getting a new studio album too, naturally we all wondered, "are they trying to give us some sort of overdose?" I, for one, tried to keep my consumption levels to a minimum because I was worried my medical insurance wouldn't cover it if I didn't. But it turns out this album is actually pretty good, so I lost control of myself and quickly ended up in rehab. Sure enough, the Rehab Center turned out to be full of other Suede fans all suffering from the same problem. Some of us weren't very happy about this (to say the least), and there was even talk of a class-action lawsuit, but when we asked our lawyers about it they all just laughed at us. Honestly, I've never been all that fond of lawyers.
