Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

Meat Loaf - Not A Dry Eye In The House

The second single off Meat Loaf's Welcome To The Neighbourhood and this is about on par with the first one.

Meat Loaf just seems a decade too late in putting these out but I can still garner something from them.

Enya - Anywhere Is

Link

Fun fact, my wife claims to be related to Enya, though it's hard to track it back properly...

This is the lead single of The Memory Of Trees, her fourth album and I think it's excellent.

She's captured this unique space in world and new age music with her own Celtic twinge, I'm not really sure what it is, but it gets to you good.

The Connells - '74-'75

Link

God, I forgot all about the existence of this one.

A real jangle pop hit in the mid 90's that came from absolutely nowhere to being a big hit in Europe, their only real hit, at least the only I have any knowledge.

It's really catchy, the second single off their 5th album, it's got some early indie rock and jangle pop vibes, somewhere between the Smiths and what was to come in the 2000's.

A real surprising throwback.

Boyzone - Father And Son

Link

One more Boyzone's debut album, the 5th of their 6 singles off it, it's a Cat Stevens cover in case it wasn't obvious...

It's basically a Ronan Keating solo song, but I still enjoy it for what it is, and Boyzone have done very well here so far.

A quintessential part of a childhood in 90's Ireland.

Blur - The Universal

Link

Another milestone hit, 1100 tracks from 13 years of music, on we go...

This is Blur straying away from their traditional Britpop style into something completely different I feel.

It's still a very good track, I don't really know where to place it, the second single off The Great Escape after Country House.

Also a big hit in Ireland for the late showband legend Joe Dolan.

Paul Weller - Out Of The Sinking

Link

Paul Weller's 3rd solo entry here, the lead single off his third solo album, Stanley Road (one of his best).

Just a good solid old style rock song, bit of a 90's twang but holds its own all the same.

Pretty decent and solid as usual.

Cast's follow up to single to Alright, and this one I think is just slightly better.

A strong blend of Brtipop La's-esque jangle pop to move it high enough up the list for me.

Mike & the Mechanics - All I Need Is A Miracle '96

Link

A re-recording of an earlier Mike & the Mechanics hit from 1986, part of their 96 Hits compilation album.

It's no Over My Shoulder, don't think it's aged as well, very much stuck in the 80's and can't click into it fully, just feels out of place for the time.

Status Quo with the Beach Boys - Fun, Fun, Fun

Link

A real throwback, I like it but definitely out of its time.

This was on Status Quo's 22nd album and the remaining members of the Beach Boys joined in,

Weird to hear in the mid 90's, but it is fun.

Terrorvision - Perseverance

Link

Another really strange but welcome choice, I've not listened to a huge amount of Terrorvision, but I find myself quite liking this one.

A blend of alt rock with a punk twist in there, it's on their 3rd studio album, and kind of came from nowhere to end up here.

Cracks my top 200 though.
