Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

BBE - Seven Days and One Week

Link

French-Italian trance/house music, this was their debut single and bit top 10 hit around most of Europe, by far their most successful track.

Do I get it? No, not really, can't understand how something like this did so well, though I would have been a bit too young at the time...

Just not my scene and not sure it's aged all that well.

Used to love this track, probably showing my age...

Haha, probably just showing my background growing up in rural Ireland! House music passed me by bigtime...

Stretch 'n' Vern - I'm Alive

Link

Stretch 'n' Vern, were, and apparently still, are an electronic duo from London.

This was one of just 2 singles they had out in the mid 90's, the sampling of Boogie Wonderland does a lot of heavy lifting here, always threatening to take off in the background but always just falling short in the end.

It's a surprisingly fun time, no idea what they're really saying, but it definitely has something going for it.

Healy & Amos - Stamp!

Link

Another duo with a limited amount of releases to their name.

Jeremy Healy was known for producing and making sound effects for the likes of Duran Duran and Boy George.

This is ok-ish, another one very much of it's time that I definitely can't recall having heard before.

Livin' Joy - Follow the Rules

A 3rd entry for Livin' Joy, and probably their weakest yet, the follow up single to Don't Stop Movin'.

Definitely down to the tracks that get thrown in late.

Wildchild - Jump to My Beat

Link

The second entry from the late producer Wildchild, who passed at the age of 24, prior to the release of this.

Quite solid house/breaking music and about on a par with his previous effort, Renegade Master.

Died far too young from a heart issue.

Underworld - Pearl's Girl

Link

Not as strong as their only other entry here, the brilliant Born Slippy, but a good track nonetheless.

The opening single off the solid album, Second Toughest in the Infants, their 4th, it does feel out of place in the NOW series, but a welcome techno/prog house track no doubt.

This is obviously not the full length 9 minute version from the album also in case it wasn't obvious.

Space - Neighbourhood

Link

Neighbourhood was actually the single Space released prior to Female of the Species, but got a rerelease on the back of it.

Another solid alt-rock/dance Primal Scream styled track that's every bit as good as their previous single here, hard to separate the 2 really.

Bjork - Possibly Maybe

Link

Bjork remains in the category of undeniably talented but I just can't fully get there for whatever reason.

Very trip hop stylistically speaking, this was the 5th of 6 singles she released off Post, her second solo album, from 1995.

I do like it, but I always feel like I'm missing something to take it to that next level.

Shed Seven - Chasing Rainbows

Link

Shed Seven are one of those Britpop-lite bands who never hit the same heights as the big guns, but always did reasonably well on their coattails so to speak.

Chasing Rainbows would be the lead single off Shed Seven's yet to be released 3rd album, a solid alt late 90's alt rock track, kind of what you'd expect from the band if you've heard them.

And thus, closes NOW 35 and the year of 1996, tomorrow starts 1997 and just 29 years til we catch up...
