I went to the movies last night, could have seen any new release. But nope, I went with Ken Russell's The Devils, a controversial 70s cult historical horror. The film was deemed so inappropriate in 1971, they had to cut a lot of footage out. Yet in the final dying days of Warner Brothers before the merger with Paramount Skydance was finalized, WB gave the film a 4K restoration and released the original director's cut in theaters 55 years later. Thank you, Warner Brothers. If Digger and a 4K director's cut of The Devils are your last two creative offerings, you have gone out with style. As for the movie itself, it's wild, edgy, creepy, disturbing, etc. It felt like a Buñuel movie in theme, but way more daring and over-the-top in content and direction. The Devils is also thought-provoking. Its theme on religion isn't surface level 'Catholicism = hypocrisy.' There's a bit more to it. Anyway, The Devils served as yet another reminder of why I prefer past cinema to present, and why I currently prefer re-releases on the big screen to new releases. That said, I'm down for a movie poll here, but not 2026. Something else, please.
