Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close

Link

Not a bad effort at dance meets R&B.

Gaines was a member of Prince's New Power Generation and then had some minor success as a solo artist, this being her big hit.

This was the title track of her second album in 1995, but wasn't released as a single until 1997.

Boyz II Men-esque at times, not fully there but I can dig it.

George Michael - Star People (Forthright Edit)

Link

Not a bad effort at dance meets R&B.

The 5th of 6 singles off his Older album, it's got a bit more going for it me compared to some of the previous efforts.

A solid enough dance track and more in the style I like from George Michael, not quite Wham! level, but a decent track.

En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love)

Link

Not a bad effort at dance meets R&B.

A big hit for En Vogue, the lead single of EV3, their 3rd album in case that wasn't obvious.

Good, but they've had better, still shows up now and again these days and was a huge hit, and arguably their last big hit really, though they are still together by all accounts.

Shola Ama - You Might Need Somebody

Link

Pretty much a one hit wonder, Shola Ama was only a teenager when this came out on her debut album, Much Love in 1997, a cover of an early Randy Crawford song from 1981.

It's real easy listening radio soup-pop, in the good kind of way, very smooth for sure.

Ama hasn't hit these heights since, releasing just one album in the last 20 years, but this track alone appears to be putting her at over 600k listens a month on Spotify, so it holds up.

Coolio - C U When U Get There (feat. 40 Thevz)

Link

Is it particularly good or after aging well? Probably not.

Do I love it anyway? Sure do.

That's the beauty of this whole project!

This was the lead single off Coolio's 3rd album, and was heavily used in the Martin Lawrence/Tim Robbins buddy comedy, Nothing to Lose, as per the video.

Right up my alley.

Warren G - Smokin' Me Out (feat. Ron Isley)

Link

Another real leftfield pick, but appropriately following up from Coolio I guess.

Warren G is not someone I expected to find on here, but a welcome surprise.

This was the final single off his second album, having already done well off Regulate on his first, this time featuring vocals from Ron Isley, of the Isley Brothers naturally enough.

A good time.

Damage - Wonderful Tonight

Link

Moving swiftly along to boyband Damage covering Eric Clapton, the 5th single off their debut album.

Not a song I'm a huge fan of in general, and this version doesn't help.

Better than the last one though...

911 - The Journey

Link

The title track and 6th and final single off 911's debut album.

A standard forgettable boyband ballad from the late 90's, it's been done and it's been done better.

Boyzone - Isn't It A Wonder

Link

The 3rd single off Boyzone's second album, more like it in terms of catchy 90's pop, much more my speed, even if it's not near their best.

Boyzone get treated well here in large due to nostalgia, which is particularly relevant as they're Irish.

That said I still really like their style of boyband pop.
