Wow this is a really unfortunate matchup. I think they're both entirely excellent at what they do, but I suppose I like Mingus's variation more than James's. I can listen to Mingus with anyone and in any mood, while James's oeuvre doesn't allow for that.

This one is so hard... currently leaning towards James (particularly the Aphex Twin albums), but I'm going to have to revisit Mingus some before picking a vote.

What a shame. James is one of my favourite artists, and it's pretty hard to touch the likes of Surfing on Sine Waves, the two Selected Ambient Works albums, and the first four or five Analogue Bubblebath EPs. I haven't really even had time to take in the new Caustic Window discovery. He's quite possibly my favourite electronic artist of all-time (and I like to think that I've been fairly outspoken in my promotion of electronic music ever since I joined, and at a time when it was certainly a more marginal topic for discussion on the site), and yet voting against him here is still a really easy decision. They're both geniuses, but Mingus' music is on another plane a little more often than James' - seriously, there isn't anybody touching The Black Saint, Ah Um, Pithecanthropus, Mingus x5, At Antibes. Like sheeeeeeiiiiiiiit. What the fuck.
I'm drunk and rambling and not even making any point, but vote to Mingus. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

James. I adore Pithecanthropus Erectus and some of his other '50s offerings, but I haven't been able to escape the feeling that some of Mingus' later work was just smoke and mirrors.
