Both are singular geniuses with a wide variety of genre explorations and very high highs with few, if any, lows. Still, I can't think of many artists who can make so many albums of tip-top caliber in highly divergent styles like Coltrane's collab with Johnny Hartman, Ascension, Giant Steps, and the Olatunji Concert, not to mention the masterful A Love Supreme. Mingus is no slouch, but he's no Coltrane.

I'm going Mingus for this. Both rank amongst my favorite jazz musicians (duh!), but Mingus wins this by a nose.
