Funk vs. Electronics

The Meters were a New Orleans funk band founded in 1968. They went on to open for such acts as Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones. Give it up for Art, Leo, George, and Zigaboo, presenting their fifth album, Rejuvenation.

Rejuvenation by The Meters, nominated by noWaxJim.

The music of 80's had to come from somewhere. One of those sources was this band, a German group that specialized in a new electronic sound that was so pervasive in the next decade. Today's album is their international breakthrough.

Autobahn by Kraftwerk, nominated by BasdeWit97.

This matchup is really unfortunate. Rejuvenation is a really fantastic funk record deserving of more than a first round dismissal, but I just can't vote against Autobahn here. It's such a revolutionary work. I prefer a few of the later Kraftwerk record, but this one really put them on the map.

Yeah, this match-up sucks.

Having said that, you peeps should really give Rejuvenation a decent spin - it's one of 70s funk's solid gold nuggets. I was gutted when I saw it was going up against Autobahn, but if you've got funky bones rather than ones made of metal and wires maybe you'll find a new album to treasure.

And after Graham Central Station got trounced by Roxy, y'all should give funk a chance.

Peace out and all the bollocks.

Theme: Pioneering

Autobahn was Kraftwerkโ€™s international breakthrough and was also a major landmark in the history of electronic music. The idea for the first half of the album is summarized on Wikipedia:

Quote:
The title track is intended to capture the feeling of driving on the Autobahn: from travelling through the landscape, the high-speed concentration on the fast lane, to tuning the car radio and the monotony of a long trip.

Thereโ€™s no citation for that passage, so it may as well be an anonymous opinion, but it describes my experience with the album perfectly. In a sense, I have to tip my cap to Kraftwerk, because itโ€™s not easy to create something thatโ€™s so profoundly antithetical to what I want music to be. I've probably heard this album four or five times and all but one of those listens ended with me wanting to bang my head into a wall. The one positive listen came after a fight with my mother-in-law; you know, a time when sitting in a car on the highway didn't seem like a such bad change of pace.

By contrast, Rejuvenation is always a fun trip, and from one of the pioneers of the genre, no less. The 11-minute jam, โ€œIt Ainโ€™t No Useโ€, is the highlight for sure.

You're right! ๐Ÿคฃ

Anyways, hard to vote against either of these. They're both mad dope. Will have to take my time with this one. But this is probably the toughest matchup in the entire first round.

This is really hard for me. I absolutely adore Kraftwerk as visionaries and musicians but I also really enjoy The Meters as for a time they were one of the most consistent bands in their genre. I think I'm going to vote Kraftwerk but both records are great.

One of those initially thought as an easy vote, again... Not so it seems...

Both of these deserve a vote: Funk vs. Electronics? Not so... Funk & Electronics is my vote.

I'm not sure I could go through Kraftwerk albums too much anymore (this happened with Sparks too). Kind of got bored of it too quickly when I listened to it a few days ago; I might give it another listen, but I gave the vote to the meters.
