Paco de Lucia died earlier this year, and most here may know him through collaborating with jazz musicians in the USA (most famously with Al Di Meola & John McLaughlin), and, in Spain, where he pioneered flamenco fusion and is held in huge regard.
Paco de Lucia has a vast discography and just picking two examples is near impossible, so I'm just picking a couple of tracks that resonate with me. The first track that I'm going to put forward from Paco de Lucia is fairly widely known. as it crossed over during the early Balearic/rave scene & if you go anywhere in southern Spain, you always seem to hear it playing in the background.
The second is a classical piece my father used to play all of the time when I was growing up and I grew to love it. Paco de Lucia performed this music at a recital and Joaquín Rodrigo said afterwards that it was the best interpretation of the music he'd ever heard:
I had the privilege of seeing the maestro in concert at the Festival de la Guitarra in Córdoba a couple of years back and was awe-struck at just how good he was.
Damn, it sucks that Paco de Lucia passed away earlier this year. I can't believe I haven't heard of him until now. From the examples given by AM, he's excellent and I would love to hear more of his pieces. But, Joey Santiago is someone I'm more familiar with as someone who's influenced my style of playing. I'd feel bad for voting for one over the other. I'm going to have to think this one through. _________________
I haven't heard de Lucia yet, so I have to do some listening before I vote. It'll be tough, though, as Santiago is one of my favorite guitarists. As always, the name of the game for me is distinctiveness, not virtuosity. My favorite example:
