- Post subject: Voting on Genres Through Charts
|
I've been thinking about the genre system. Instead of claiming certain album are certain styles, what about voting on which genre they are through custom charts?
1. A whole mess of genres are programmed into the database.
2. Above the custom charts menu, there will be a separate list for genre charts. If you want to make a new one, click on it.
3. On the chart editing screen, select which genre you want.
4. List the albums. The albums will then be voted that genre. Which ever genres have the most votes will be what the album is voted on the album's page. However, an album will need a certain amount of votes to be called a certain genre, maybe 10?

And about adding genres, how about we use a function were users can nominate genres, and the moderators and/or data moderators can vote upon or automatically accept the genre in the database? it might be months before we have a lot of genres in the site, but some progress beats no progress, correct?

Problem with the first method is that only about 160 members are level 7 and have acces to custom charts. With only 160 people, that will slow down progress massively. It is still a fun idea though, but maybe it should be supplementary? So you can do what you proposed and it still counts as a vote, but it is not the only way to cast votes.

I think it would be useful, especially if listeners are looking for certain music to listen to then the genre feature would be helpful.

Or people could just assign genres when adding an album which will then be moderated by data moderators, but I really don't think genre charts are 1) needed (since we have custom charts) or 2) worth the coding effort. Nor do I care much for searching by genres, I can just go to RYM for that tbh. _________________

Not that I view it as such, but wouldn't that be the competition? I mean, I don't know of another music site without genres. I'm not the only one who has accounts on other sites like Allmusic, RYM, and Last.fm. They all have genres in the database, and it makes BEA look primitive. We want to attract more people, not send them to another site.

I actually, uh, agree? I don't think genre charts are the way to go about it, though. I don't have a great alternative to suggest, but genre charts seem pretty pointless to me. Seems like it would have the same effect but be much more efficient to just let users vote for an album's genre on its album page.

Ehh. seems like a waste of time and energy, which will ultimately lead to loads of ridiculous bickering about stupid sub sub sub genres. "Cocteau Twins are shoegaze. No, they're dream pop. No, you're both wrong, they're ethereal wave!" _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I was under the impression that AM was already in the process of implementing a tagging system, which would include allowing users to assign one or more genres to albums. I think for the vast majority of cases, this will be good enough. The question is what to do when there's a conflict...
Maybe just leave it to the judgement of the mods? Hopefully it won't be too much additional work for them.

This 100%. The point's been brought up before that BEA isn't a database and honestly I think it's better off that way.
