for me, the most interesting discussion point about this album is to compare it to the 4-Track Demos release which overlaps with a lot of the songs on Rid Of Me.

personally, i prefer the demo versions. although i respect Steve Albini's work and production/recording style, i often find it makes for a less-pleasing listening experience than a more hands-on producer who adds just a bit more studio gloss than albini's bare, more-direct, more-live-sounding work. for example, i think he did a great job with Pixies' Surfer Rosa, but i keep hoping for a remaster of The Breeders' Pod that beefs up the sound just a little bit.

Albini & PJ Harvey are like the indie rock dream team. I LOVE the production on this album. PJ Harvey had actually been touring with the Jesus Lizard (Albini was their producer at the time) in support of Dry the year prior so I remember not being too surprised at her decision to go all "Man-Size" with her sound. As the 4-track demos indicate, she was actually striving for that claustrophobic sound, and Albini simply supports her vision. Love the muscle and dynamics that he adds to her already formidable sound. Rid of Me may even be the pinnacle of the loud-soft-loud dynamic that The Pixies are known for. The sound on the record is so dynamic that it's pretty much aural theater, and it's probably the closest that any early 90s indie rock band got to art rock. It sounds particularly amazing on a good set of speakers.

I can be wrong, but i thought i discovered this album through the movie 'Strange Days' where Juliette Lewis in persona performed a song from PJ Harvey's album 'Rid of Me'. Good movie by the way.

With that in mind, I bet you'd really, really dig this, newbands...

Throwing Muses (1986) by Throwing Muses

Kristin Hersh is one of the best female singer/songwriters in the indie kingdom. Also, check out St. Vincent if you haven't yet. There's a reason why Albummaster chose St. Vincent to immediately follow after PJ Harvey - check out St. Vincent's "Your Lips Are Red" off of the wonderful Married Me for the most obvious link.
