2.Have your methods changed at all over the lat 10 years?
My methods are as follows:
1.Live performances. I would guess I am in a minority here, but for me music is a social experience that is best enjoyed live. Whenever a band is going to play where I live, I try to find out something about them. If I like them, I go to their show and buy their albums.
2.Samplers. The SXSW artist sampler series is a music fan's wet dream. Every year I discover 40-60 new artists this way.
3.Friends. There is a distinct link between personality and music, and I trust my friends to turn me on to good shit. In the old days...we traded mix tapes. Now...we swap USB drives.
4.BEA. Honestly, I haven't discovered many artists through this site, but I do use it a lot to find the best albums by artists who have been recommended to me elsewhere. So it is a rather important resource to me.
5.Books, Wikipedia and other miscellaneous resources. These are not to be discounted. Would I have ever heard of Robert Johnson if not for reading books about Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton? Probably. But reading those books gave me a head start.
Now...what it is interesting to me is not one of those methods involves the radio. 20 years ago...hands down it was radio and music television. During the 90s I had Direct TV and those satellite stations were responsible for introducing me to so much music.
So...to repeat the questions:1.How do you discover new music? 2. Have your methods changed over the last 10 years?
BEA is my top source right now, followed by blogs/review sites, followed by rym timelines. Sometimes I use last fm's "similar artists" feature, which has had a surprisingly high success rate.
I've always discovered the vast majority of new music from friends/peers. That hasn't changed over the past ten years, and probably never will. As a secondary source, I used to discover a lot of new music from the radio while driving. But radio stations typically play the same artists and the same songs. And after a while, I felt like I heard them all. Today I rarely listen to radio. But today I'd have to say BEA has become my new secondary source. Joining this site has led me to listen to things I wouldn't have otherwise.
