Here's a question, back in the 80s, was there any real describable difference between jangle pop and indie pop?
Indie pop has never had a describable sound of its own, imo, but as far as indie pop genres that weren't jangle pop, I'd say twee pop and Replacements/latter-day Husker Du power pop are two distinct forms that could be lumped in there. I agree with your general assessment though that we tend to not refer to that latter set as such now, though I'd argue that if indie pop's breadth is wide enough to contain what it does now, it can be used as a replacement for college rock when we discuss the 80s. Plus I think those bands are closer to R.E.M. than Beat Happening is.

I'm not sure they really called it indie pop in the 80s. The classification of "indie" only really referred to label type for a long time, then when stuff like Modest Mouse put indie into the mainstream at the start of the 21st century, then everything was about being indie regardless of if a major label was behind it. I've never thought of indie as a sound as much as a DIY philosophy, which just generally crosses over to being more lo-fi and less conventional, but of course now that indie is the mainstream, none of it makes any sense.

Love most on here (basically up to Noitalinna Huraa) and like all. Beat Happening are included but I have one of their 90s albums on my indie pop chart so yeah
On the topic of indie pop, it's way too hard to define. I wouldn't say it went as far to include Replacements, REM, etc. and other college rock examples buuut who's to say what is and isn't indie pop with such a broad term as it is. Really though with so many jangle pop bands incorporating indie pop sensibilities into their music it's basically useless to argue about it. _________________
Indie pop for me will always be that mid 80's post Smiths explosion of guitar pop. I think before that we just called it Indie...Orange Juice, Go B's etc.
C86/Jangle pop bands such as Razorcuts, Chesterf!elds, Bodines, Close Lobsters and of course most importantly The Pastels created what I think of as classic Indie Pop which then saw labels such as Sarah Records, and across the Atlantic K records formed releasing brilliant DIY records which quite frankly (Mr Shankley) make those Smiths records sound like OK Computer or something in the recording sense. I would suggest listening to Another Sunny Day, The Springfields, early Pastels, Beat Happening or The Sea Urchins to get a real grasp of what an Indie Pop record sounds like.
The term Indie Pop has been so widely abused by lazy journalists that it's pretty much lost it's identity but basically if it doesn't come with a fanzine and a badge then it's probably safe to say it's not pure Indie Pop 😉
I think nowadays we've had that recent explosion of American bands which I guess you'd call Indie Pop...Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, Real Estate, Vivian Girls etc
