|
Don't know about you guys, but I'm not a huge fan of pop music. But once in a blue moon, there's a great pop album that comes out, and when that happens I love the genre.
For the past 3 months I've been obsessed with Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion, I can't get enough of it, why can't more pop records be this good? Anyway, how do you guys feel about this? Is there any other amazing pop records I'm missing out on? Or do you think pop just sucks?

There have been a lot of great pop albums over the course of pop(ular) music history. It just depends what you're into to begin with. I assume a lot of indie music fans (here) just don't dig pop. You likes what you likes.
(And i'll second the last taylor swift album) _________________ fav artists NOW | ALL-TIME favs | i listen 2 more music than u so u don't have 2!

That's true, though I have to say the majority of the pop albums I've listened to generally have the few good singles to sell the album, and then just filler, from my experience at least.

Pop is kind of an interesting term.
I feel like Nirvana could be seen as a pop group if your definition of a pop group is appeals to the masses.
Having said that my favorite pop artists, who also wrote decent albums, based on the more common definition of it:
1. Michael Jackson
2. Justin Timberlake
3. Bruno Mars
Somehow the aesthetic of indie pop really confuses me and drives me batty when I flip to the alternative channel and hear something like 21 Pilots or Walk the Moon on it...

Yeah, pop is hard as anything to define. Hell, I know Stevie Wonder is considered R&B/Soul but he's way more like Michael Jackson than he is Marvin Gaye or Otis Redding. Is Sufjan Stevens pop? How about Grimes? Sweet Trip? If so I'm a fan.

I'm a little embarrased to admit it, but this album actually is pretty good (pretty cohesive, not just a hit or two is what I mean)... my wife is a big fan cause she grew up at a time when it's Britney Bitch!
But I actually ended up liking this record more than she did:
Femme Fatale by Britney Spears
I also secretly fell in love with this title track as I found it on Spotify like a year before it hit the radio as I felt it was a pop song that had some class to it... now I can't stand it (I have no idea if the album is good):

Lights by Ellie Goulding
And then there's this album, which I guess is pop that I actually fell in love with this last listen (didn't really get it 2 or 3 years ago and it was a hard pass for me at that time):

I realize this is more in the electronic world, but to me this is a great pop record... speaking of which I think a huge element of pop music is that it is electronic. I'm not saying that is the definition, but if you think about it, from Michael Jackson and even Stevie Wonder or even Abba/disco stuff... it totally leaned more electronic than anything else.
And yes, although not your typical pop, I would totally think of Grimes as pop (experimental pop or whatevs)
This is another discussion, but I think that's what makes Kid A so pivotol... until then the music snobs had "drum machines have no soul" bumper stickers (I mean that's the world I perceived at least... maybe you had a different experience).
But then there was Talking Heads and their electronic... ... so totally not a black/white analysis.
Oh the album I thought of was:
