It was a song rather than an album that got me into punk. 'Shot by both sides' by Magazine was seen as a crossover record that was part rock (which I was into at the time) and part punk, but the more I listened to it the more it was the punk edge to the record I wanted more of rather than the respectable rock record part that I bought it for.
I could also argue that Sunbather was my true genre-breaker, but I know there's that whole, "It's not true black metal," argument that I've had some people try to use on me and frankly I don't care enough or know enough about black metal to argue back, but they are both fantastic pieces of art, regardless. Also Sunbather lead me to more melancholic, relationship stress themed music, not necessarily black metal, so I'll toss Ulver on the table instead.
I think this album lives up to their name more than their Refinement of the Decline album, which is the album the only people I know who also listen to Stars of the Lid prefer.

Being your average ignorant American, I thought only good music came from English speaking countries. Luckily I was like 17 when I first heard this... and it so blew my mind, I didn't care about language. Glad I was proved wrong early enough on to reach out to other languages earlier in life (which is kind of funny looking back at it, considering I realized I almost only 20-40% pay attention to lyrics, pending on how much attention they demand).
Not a genre other than "world music" I suppose as they call it here in the States. I don't consider this world music... but whatevs.

Speaking of other languages, the passion of this is so great, I love it and got me to respect flamenco. But really... maybe these two albums have nothing to do with the Genre (I'm constantly having a hard time finding Genre being a thing I associate with what I like about something), rather just good music, regardless of the genre. I love this album, but the more I think about it... I don't love it because it is flamenco.

Behemoth is a Black Metal band, probably one of the most difficult metal genres to like in the begining!
Being at school at the time of the britpop explosion, this album opened up a whole new world to me. Dark smokey clubs, pills and banging beats. Them were the days !!! (Reminisces)
