I realize you mention critical recognition, but Beach Boys have a lot more hugely popular music than just the stuff on Pet Sounds. I voted Violent Femmes. Their debut is an all time top 20 for me, and they just totally dropped off the map after that (even though Hallowed Ground is pretty good,) so they are sort of the perfect example of a one album wonder. _________________ Overall - The 2010's - 2020
I voted DJ Shadow because out of the artists here that I've heard, there's the biggest quality gap between his best and the rest of his discography.
It's kind of confusing because the thread title says 'best,' but the question in your first post is about critical acclaim. Two different things. Well that's not true. I don't know what measurement you're using both God's Son and The Lost Tapes have a 9.0 user rating on metacritic (only .1 lower than Illmatic) and both of those, as well as Life is Good have an 81 critic score.
