Iโ€™m listening to Angelique Kidjoโ€™s re-make Of Talking Heads โ€œRemain In Lightโ€ as I type this.

No verdict as yet. The influence of Fela Kuti on Remain In Light is well known, and so taking the album in a more Afro-beat direction is no stretch. Iโ€™m not sure if this works in its favour, or if a re-make has more merit if itโ€™s re-imagined in a completely different context: Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift for instance (although Iโ€™ve never tried to listen either Taylor Swift or Ryan Adamsโ€™ album to know how well it worked).

Are there any album re-makes you like?

What makes an album re-make successful?

Do you think this trend will grow into the future, as the canon of great albums from the last 50 odd years becomes more codified?

in a rare hip-hop example, Elzhi covered Illmatic in its entirety. It actually turned out pretty dope

I just finished listening to the Kidjo album. It sounds fine, but if anything it highlights how great Remain In Light is, due to the absence of several things, primarily that Kidjo is not David Byrne. For me, the appeal of Remain In Light is the catharsis of Byrneโ€™s nervous energy and anxieties, juxtaposed to those insistent rhythms and grooves, which in themselves speak to me of the inevitable and machine-like demands of a contemporary western life. The brilliance of Talking Heads, Remain In Light, is perhaps not the African influence of Fela Kuti, but that the appropriation means something new against other appropriations: the โ€œpreacher on the radioโ€ delivery on โ€œOnce In A Lifetimeโ€, for example.

I find this one highly amusing. It's the entire Abbey Road album. About half of it is really good.

These ones are real fun too. They're remakes OK Computer and Sergeant Pepper and the Dark Side of the Moon.

Rebuild The Wall by Luther Wright And The Wrongs

A track by track bluegrass recreation of The Wall by Pink Floyd, complete with all of the spoken word snippets and between track sounds. I love this album.

I knew "The Wall" had some potential. If only done the right way!

Some of these are just albums of cover songs but many of them are complete reinterpretations of entire albums:
